Troll Ending Explained
Deep inside the mountain of Dovre, something gigantic awakens after being trapped for a thousand years. Destroying everything in its path, the creature is fast approaching the capital of Norway. But how do you stop something you thought only existed in Norwegian folklore?
When Nora Tidemann gets appointed as an advisor, while investigating she feels that she needs to get help from her father Tobias and visits him. His words seem gibberish at first but soon he takes them to the place where footprints end and try to look for evidence, on the ground.
While Tobias is investigating the ground, Nora smells something that she calls hyper-nature and soon enough, a giant troll stands in front of everyone, as proof. The next plan of action is to destroy the giant by shooting and bombing him. But the military efforts don’t work on him, rather agitate even more.
Tobias empathises with the giant and tries to calm him down, which seems to work but another tank starts attacking him from the side and in that moment of rage, Tobias is thrown away at a distance – ultimately leading to his death. Before taking his last breath, he says some random words like the Palace, The King and home.

After his death, Nora goes through his notebook and tries to make some connections with what he said. She could only infer how the troll ate one of the bleeding Christian soldier and in the folklore, they hate the church bells. So she devises a plan to trap the giant by hanging giant bells on the military helicopters and flying around the troll.
The plan works as the troll can’t bear to hear the bell sound but soon he starts destroying the helicopters, killing everyone. Captain Kris, Nora and Andreas escape by a hair and at the headquarters, Nora is criticised for the failed mission. She is shown the door, while Frederick Markussen takes the charge and decides to use a missile against the giant.
It could cause major destruction, thus, the city of Oslo is completely evacuated and the missile launch is put in place. Andreas asks Sigrid Hodne to hack into the system and stop the missile launch, while he and Nora make a big discovery. While trying to connect the dots, she realises that the clues in the notebook lead to the royal palace.

At the palace, Rikard Sinding recognises Nora as Tobias’s daughter and shows her how the palace is actually built on the Troll’s kingdom and in the basement lies the remains of all the slain giants. When Nora points her high beam torch at the remains – they solidify on the light and it gives her an idea to tackle the giant.
She decides to lure him to a place where Captain Kris with other soldiers will be waiting with high-beam lights. By showing one of the skulls, she races to the location, with the giant chasing them. Somehow, they reach the exact spot and the plan seems to work as the giant is slowly solidifying into a stone.
But for Nora, she can’t bear watching him in pain and pulls the plug. She reaches out to him calmly and tells him to back to the caves and never come back. For a moment you think maybe it will end on a good note, with the Troll disappearing as if he never existed but just then the sun rises and freezes him to stone.
For everyone else, it’s a moment of celebration as the threat is now gone but just then Andreas asks Nora if, she thinks that there could be more like him in the caves. She doesn’t really answer it but soon in the mid-credits a similar movement is shown in the caves. And it could only mean that more trolls are coming.
