Trainwreck: Storm Area 51 Review: Very Amusing Entertainer

Trainwreck: Storm Area 51 Review: When a shitpost on a random Facebook group calling people to storm Area 51, a highly classified United States Air Force base, goes viral, things start to unravel for the creator of the event, Matty Roberts, as well as the US Air Force, FBI, and Federal Aviation Administration.

Director

Jack MacInnes

The series has 2 episodes, each with a runtime of around 50 minutes.

It isn’t every day that a random person suddenly finds themselves becoming a celebrity overnight, so much so that millions of people decide to raid a secret government facility to find aliens. And yet, that’s exactly what happens when Matty Roberts posts an event on a Facebook page and finds himself amid a controversy involving the highest orders of the government and with people threatening to shoot him and others, and more.

The season does a great job of encapsulating the madness of the situation and is both shocking and hilarious. Actually, I would say that it’s hilariously unhinged to witness years after the fact, although at that time, it’s shocking to watch the things unfold the way that they did over a meme. The series showcases the shock and the fear that the inhabitants of Rachel, Nevada, faced when they realised that there was a possibility of millions of people descending on their small town of 50 people.

The series is highly entertaining and holds on to the light-hearted nature that the event initially had started out with. Although it’s shocking how the events end up turning out to be, you will find yourself thoroughly amused at where the events start. However, I must say that the series doesn’t really benefit from its two-episode runtime and would’ve been much more entertaining if it were a shorter film. After watching two whole episodes, I found myself not getting more information than what I would’ve gotten from a film on the matter.

In the midst of the madness is Matty Roberts, the one who started it all, and I must say that I found him to be hilarious. He’s just a kid who did something random one night and then, out of the blue, was being visited by the FBI and other terrifying things that he wasn’t really ready for. At some point, you feel bad for the guy but honestly, she’s so chill that it’s hard to not feel bad for him.

Either way, it proves its points rather well and leaves us entertained regardless. There are moments of pure insanity, especially with a bunch of people running around like Naruto Uzumaki in front of confused guards at Area 51, and that is about it. I think I enjoyed the previous two instalments of the franchise, Balloon Boy and P.I. Moms, much better, but at least there’s a happy ending with this one, so that’s got to count for something.

Trainwreck: Storm Area 51 is a fun watch that has its moments, although I can’t justify the 2 episode runtime of the show. I found it entertaining, regardless, although if you’re looking for recommendations, there are other better ones that this very franchise has to offer.
