Time Hustler Review: Lighthearted Mix of History and Fun

Time Hustler (O Cangaceiro do Futuro) is a Portuguese language comedy series that revolves around the oddball Virguley, who finds himself stuck in the year 1927 as the infamous bandit of that era. The series comprises a total of seven episodes, with an average runtime of 30-35 minutes and stars Edmilson Filho in the titular role.

The complete cast of the series includes Thiago Matso, Amadeu Maia, Edmilson Filho, Valéria Vitoriano, Fábio Lago, Dudu Azevedo, Chandelly Braz, Solange Teixeira, and Fabio Goulart. Furthermore, Carina Sanginitto serves as the cinematographer while Livia Arbex, Ricardo Figueiredo de Mesquita, Leopoldo Nakata and Helgi Thor head the editing department.

The eccentric series starts with the not-so-usual introduction of Virguley, a good-for-nothing jester personality in the 21st century, who is transported to the 1920s after receiving a right-handed slap by one of the goons he gets in trouble with (if that method of time travel is a little too much for you, then just imagine the live montage itself).

At first, the show appears to be another average attempt at a time travelling comedy genre but soon makes up for the early confusion, with a robust combination of humour and history. Virguley finds the difference between the two eras and starts to receive more respect and acknowledgement than his usual life in the modern world.

Moreover, the protagonist also becomes successful at impersonating the popular bandit of those times (Lampião) and extracts advantage of the subtle similarity. This includes the formation of an outlaw group, assistance to a revenge-seeking woman, and an endless sequence of situational comedy.

That being said, the series often distracts from the main trajectory and falls prey to the mundane and forceful context. And also dwells more on unnecessary events that are mostly filler moments. However, the almost slapstick-like humour of the series saves the entire setup and prevents it from becoming another stereotypical comedy show with no life.

Another aspect of the show that I enjoyed was the attention to historical detail. The setting of 1920s Brazil adds an extra layer of authenticity and immersion to the story, and the show does a fine job of depicting the norms of the particular time period. In fact, the show made me curious enough to actually search about the Brazillian bandit and his infamous legacy.

Overall, Time Hustler (O Cangaceiro do Futuro) is a fun and enjoyable show that offers a fresh and original take on the time travel genre. Its mix of action, comedy, and drama, along with its complex and dynamic characters, make it a light-hearted watch for fans of science fiction and comedy.
