This Netflix sitcom is coming back soon on our screens, so here is The Upshaws Season 2 recap to get you up to speed with all the family’s shenanigans. It stars Wanda Sykes, along with other cast members like Mike Epps, Kim Fields, Diamond Lyons, Khali Spraggins, Page Kennedy, Jermelle Simon, Gabrielle Dennis, Mike Estime and Journey Christine. It is created by Wanda Sykes and Regina Y Hicks, and this season contains 8 episodes, each running for about 25-29 minutes.
The Upshaws is based on a blended family that is consistently squabbling and getting into trouble like any other normal family. However, when past mistakes don’t seem to gloss over the good things, the family remains on the thread of tearing apart. Characters walk a thin line between absolutely outrageous and embodying the general family crazy. This show does a great job of showing a family in all its dysfunctional glory.
The Upshaws Season 2 Recap
We left last season with Bennie Upshaw in tatters as a new girl stands at his doorstep declaring that she is his daughter. Obviously, Lucretia takes every opportunity to call him out on this and Bennie is trying to keep this thing sane by asking for the mother which really drives Regina up the wall. Before there could be any bloodshed and violence, the little girl’s mother shows up at the door, chastising her for leaving the house in the first place.
It is then found that the little girl is actually Bernard Jr.’s daughter, and her name is Sydney. The little girl’s mother at the door is Monique, who went to prom with Bennie Jr., and he ghosted her because he was in denial about his sexuality. This information was enough to cause a rift in the family and Bennie Sr. was almost decapitated. To be sure of the parenthood, both Lucretia and Regina force him to take a paternity test which he vehemently refuses.

He believes that if Monique says it is his, then it is his. Although, this new piece of information is not helping his prospects as a boyfriend. The one he has currently has no idea Sydney exists, let alone that she is Bennie Jr.’s daughter. Meanwhile, the family is going through another struggle with Kelvin and Tasha. Regina still finds is extremely difficult to trust Tasha and invite Kelvin fully into their lives.
But there is no problem on Bennie Sr.’s side. He is more than excited to be a big part of Kelvin’s life and even starts feeling insecure when a new man, Noah, enters Tasha’s life as her boyfriend. Apart from being charming, intelligent and perfect for Tasha, he also takes of Kelvin really well. This rubs the older Bennie the wrong way. He starts making payments and cashing gifts just to keep Kelvin in the loop.
This causes a rift between Tasha and Bennie Sr. because she wants Kelvin to move in with the couple, and he wants his son to be home. Although, they soon come to a decision that it is better to ask their son than come to a decision by involving the law in the middle. Regina was not cool at all about Kelvin coming home because going to grad school while taking care of another child is truly impossible.
She was already under a lot of pressure with her GMAT, which subsided after she passed the exam, but there were still a lot of things to consider, like funding and time management. Additionally, she did come into money for a little while but quit her job when she found out that some white guy got the scholarship because of nepotism.
There was already some tension between Lucretia and Regina after their sister Althea came into town. The duo started rehashing old arguments and bringing up some things that they had been thinking about. Especially with Lucretia, whose new boyfriend reminds her that Regina was the reason they broke up last time. She has always been there to bail her little sister out. Not just her little sister but also her husband, Bennie Sr., even when he has gotten himself in some serious trouble.
His friend, Davis, had come into the garage with his car broken down at the same time when an inspection was supposed to happen. At the same time, Noah also came in, which made Bennie Sr. angry, and he kicked Davis’ car. Oil was leaking everywhere, and just when the inspector appeared, Davis slipped on the oil spill.
That is not the end, though. Davis decides to sue them, which causes some tension between the characters in the next few episodes. Once again, Lucretia comes to the rescue and bails the guys out of this terrible situation. There is no light at the end of the tunnel for this family, though, because soon, the police officers come in and arrest Bennie Sr. and Lucretia for buying and selling stolen car parts. This is how the season ends leaving audiences to deal with yet another cliffhanger before the new season comes.
The Upshaws Season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix. The next season will release soon on February 16, 2023.
