The Seven Deadly Sins Grudge of Edinburgh Part 1 (七つの大罪: 怨嗟のエジンバラ) premiered on Netflix on December 20, 2022, with a total runtime of approximately 50 minutes. It is a two-part spin-off movie of one of the most popular and longest-running anime franchises, The Seven Deadly Sins. Directed by Bob Shirohata and written by Rintarou Ikeda and Nakaba Suzuki, the movie follows the life of Prince Tristan, the son of Meliodas and Elizabeth.
Yuuki Kaji is reprising his role as Meliodas from the anime series. Mikako Komatsu is voicing Tristan, the son of Meliodas, with Ayumu Murase voicing an older Tristan. The other supporting and recurring cast includes Sora Amamiya as Elizabeth, Jun Fukuyama as King, Aoi Yūki as Diane, Tatsuhisa Suzuki as Ban, Yuuhei Takagi as Gowther, Kouki Uchiyama as a fairy, Yōhei Azakami as Deathpierce, Kazuyuki Okitsu as Priest, Shinnosuke Tokudome as Tyrone, Shino Shimoji as Kurumiru and Makoto Koichi as Minika.
The anime film is a collaborative production between the Marvy Jack Studios and Alfred Imageworks.

The movie opens with Prince Tristan and Gowther strolling through the town on their horses when two people on a carriage suddenly meet with an accident. Without a second thought, Tristan goes ahead to help them with the healing power he inherited from his mother, Elizabeth. The townspeople and the audience witness the strength of his power for the first time.
Gradually, it is also shown how Tristan struggles to control the power inherited by his father, Meliodas, a.k.a; the Dragon Sin of Wrath. Throughout the movie, in flashbacks, it is shown how Tristan was responsible for unintentionally hurting his friend during their daily training, which has left him traumatised. Hence, he prefers to use his healing power more often.
A few minutes into the movie, the lead antagonist appears, who is seen plotting to destroy Meliodas’ family. Elizabeth falls victim to a powerful curse, and there are only two ways to break it, the first is with the healing power of the Goddess Race, and the second is an age-old remedy used by the Fairy Race. Stubborn Tristan cannot wait any longer, so he sets out alone to break the curse and save his mother.

The animation of the movie is the most eye-catching and noteworthy. The realistic sequences and beautifully crafted characters will leave the audience in awe. The addition of slow motion during the intense fights elevates the storytelling process. The bright colours and attention to detail make the anime stand out the most.
As for the plot of the movie, it is a simple one. It is a basic story about how an old enemy returns to seek revenge from the protagonist but still manages to keep the viewers engaged. The directors and the writers did a good job of creating the story’s premise in Part 1. The story had adequate build-up, and ending it on a cliffhanger ensures that the audience will return. The voice actors also have done a phenomenal job at voicing the characters and bringing them to life on screen.
The Seven Deadly Sins Grudge of Edinburgh Part 1: Final Thoughts
With top-notch animation and mesmerising background score, the movie does not disappoint. The plot is tight and straightforward, with a new hero emerging and carrying on the legacy of battling with an all-powerful villain is everything the fans of the long-running anime had been looking for.
