The Old Guard Recap

The Old Guard Is a Secret Band of Immortal Warriors

The story introduces the audience to a covert group of operatives whose primary goal is to save human beings from threats. The catch? These operatives are immortal, and they have been alive for centuries. The group is led by Andromache of Scythia (Andy) and includes Booker, Joe and Nicky. All of these characters have seen kingdoms rise and fall and have experienced their fair share of love, loss and war.

Their immortality comes from their regenerative abilities; they can heal instantly from any wound, but the reason for them having these powers is unknown to them. Another part of the puzzle is that their powers can vanish at any point, as has happened with a previous immortal, Lykon. Either way, the world believes that they are a myth, and that’s how they have been operating for so long, until an ambush mission to South Sudan exposes them to the world.

Part 2 of the film will hopefully explore more about the immortals and their past, as the trailer mentions Uma Thurman’s character, Discord, who knows a lot more about their history since she is the first immortal.

Nile Freeman Becomes the Newest Immortal

The first film brings to the table a new immortal, US Marine Nile Freeman, who, during a mission to Afghanistan, is killed and then mysteriously comes back to life without rhyme or reason. Things turn at this moment as a new immortal is born, and Andy must bring her in before anyone else realises what is going on. The truth about the immortals must be kept at bay, and thus, Andy doesn’t have much of a choice.

The others learn about Andy through vivid dreams, and Nile has a hard time wrapping her head around her new ability. There’s a lot that goes behind her new life, including severing ties with her family. Although she struggles at first, even choosing to leave behind this life, she eventually comes back and becomes an important part of the family.

The trailer for the second film shows Nile quite content with her new life and working side by side with Andy. Her character will hopefully have a big impact on the flow of the film and influence all the characters in one way or another, especially now that Andy is no longer an immortal.

Speaking of which, Andy, the oldest and the strongest of the immortals, suddenly stops healing in a shocking twist. The discovery leaves her vulnerable as it happens while facing off against Merrick’s men, who have kidnapped Joe and Nicky. She keeps it a secret from everyone else as she doesn’t know what it means for herself and the group. However, Booker realises the truth when she betrays Andy and shoots her, figuring out that she’s not healing as usual.

The revelation leaves a lot of questions unanswered for Andy as well as the group. Considering she’s the leader, things are left unanswered. Will she lead or will she leave her group behind and live a new life? In the trailer for the second film, we see Andy still fighting with her group; however, this time, the consequences might just get very real.

Copley Betrays and Then Aids the Team

In another twist, CIA agent Copley, who had previously hired the Old Guard for a mission, betrays them with a mission to save kidnapped girls in South Sudan, and tries to kidnap them. He is working with ruthless pharmaceutical executive Steven Merrick, who wants to experiment on the members and figure out the key to eternal life to make a lot of money. After the guards are kidnapped, they are ruthlessly tortured for days.

However, Copley eventually has a change of heart when he realises the truth behind the group and sees their dedication towards helping people. He helps them escape and eventually works with the Old Guard to use his connections and guide their missions to make the most positive impact on the world.

His new role in part 2 will most likely be that of a moral strategist who will help the group every chance he gets.

Quỳnh’s Shocking Return

Throughout the film, we learn about Quỳnh, another immortal and Andy’s closest confidant, who was captured and put into an iron maiden and thrown into the sea approximately 500 years ago. She has been drowning underwater ever since. It’s a horrific form of torture, and Andy holds herself responsible for not being able to save her friend.

However, although she thinks that Quỳnh is lost at sea, she returns towards the end of the first film in front of Booker in a surprising twist. In the trailer for the second film, we see her wanting revenge against Andy and then getting into a fight with her. We will explore her anger and her history with Andy in the second film, which will also try to figure out whether she is a friend or foe for the group.
