The Mysterious Benedict Society Season 2 Episode 6 Review: Dr Curtain Inches Closer on the Talented Orphans

The Mysterious Benedict Society Season 2 Episode 6 finds the group split into different directions while falling prey to Curtain’s inefficient mercenaries. The latest instalment is directed by Lena Khan and features Tony Hale in the double role of the eccentric benefactor and the evil twin. For the unversed, the show revolves around a bunch of talented orphans and their adventures and is created by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay.

The complete cast of the series includes MaameYaa Boafo as Rhonda, Ryan Hurst as Milligan, Mystic Inscho as Reynie Muldoon, Seth Carr as Sticky, Emmy DeOliveira as Kate Wetherall, and Marta Kessler as Constance Contraire, Tony Hale as Dr Curtain/Mr Benedict and Kristen Schaal as Number Two.

-The Mysterious Benedict Society Season 2 Episode 6 Does Not Contain Spoilers-

The sixth episode starts with Reynie, Sticky, Kate and Constance getting briefly united with the teachers, after multiple back-and-forth clashes. However, the reunion is only short-lived, after Curtain’s muscle man, follows them inside the suffocating hideout prepared by Dr Garrison. Morever, this time around, the talented orphans get separated from each other and find themselves in different moments of frustration.

The fresh instalment of the season also features Mr Benedict, who finally seems to have found some solid ground after all. He looks to be aware of Number Two’s plan to kidnap his brother and also attempts to assist him in the process. The only issue that remains in the otherwise convincingly foolproof scheme, is the vile intention of the evil twin.

The episode works as a kind of releasing point for Reynie, who vents his disappointment, in front of Rhona. The calm and composed member of the group finally has a moment of outburst, which was extremely important to balance out his emotional state. Moreover, it was also the first time, I saw some legit anger in the series (there is a limit to deadpan humour, right?).

The most intriguing and witty Constance is also finally entrapped by Dr Curtain’s happiness formula (after she and Sticky end up staying with an overjoyed Coppenhgane couple). Furthermore, the fake compliments from the brutally honest ten-year-old might be a serious matter of worry, for not just Sticky, but the complete bunch. Even I couldn’t watch her praising the homemade cookie by the couple, instead of straightaway trolling them.

Unlike any other episodic series, The Mysterious Benedict Society has a constant number of moving pieces, that avoid any filler content from intermingling with the story. In fact, each episode takes the arc into a different stream, and yet unites it with the main purpose. Meanwhile, a layer of deadpan humour keeps it unique and engrossing.

The season is also halfway through its run, and we can expect some more drama unfolding in the rest of the episodes. I am literally game with everything, and up for all the adventure, but just leave my favourite Constance alone (please!).
