The Mosquito Coast Season 2 Episode 1: Damage Done

The lingering question throughout the first season of the show is, why is Allie running away with his family? What has he done for the government to hunt him down across the border? Those questions are finally answered in the episode.

The episode starts with the family in a boat that Allie bought on their way to the Sanctuary. While they were on their way, they decided to tell the truth to their kids who had also been asking the same questions as the viewers. They finally dive into their past.

As flashbacks start, it is shown that Allie and Margot were separated for a while. Allie was an inventor working on software trying to help people, but the head of the company decided to sell it to National Security. Allie was very much against it as it would be intrusive toward the citizens of the country.

As for Margot, it was seen that she was involved with another man, but upon deeper dive, it was shown that they were creating something in secret. It was revealed to be explosive. They were planning to plant it in a biological lab that was conducting experiments that could harm the environment.

Allie soon grows suspicious of the duo and decides to take matters into his own hands. He arrives at a facility which was using his software, and using that, he tries to gain more information about Margot’s friend. He soon finds out that the man is an activist who was frequently part of violent protests.

Allie is caught by security, but he is let off with a warning for breaking into the facility. On the other hand, Margot and her friend were planting the explosive in the lab. Allie tries to call Margot to stop her from doing the violent act, but he is too late.

Just when the duo is about to leave, they see a woman going inside the facility; Margot tries to stop her, but her efforts go in vain, and the woman dies in the explosion. Allie comes up to distraught Allie, and they decide to flee from the scene together along with their children.

The Mosquito Coast Episode 1 Final Thoughts:

Still from The Mosquito Coast

The episode was a decent continuation of season 1. The viewers finally get their answers which is satisfactory. But the loopholes in the episode could not be avoided. Each instance in the episode could be questioned due to its inability to maintain any logical explanation of the occurrences.

The episode still failed to make the show any better. It certainly could not recover itself from the mess that season 1 was. The attempt to put across their message could still not be done in the new episode.

The Mosquito Coast Season 2 is steaming on AppleTV+.

  1. How can Season 2 which successfully answers major looming questions in Season 1, which made it a mess, not improve on the depth/plot of the series? The characters have deepened. The plot is solid and also deepened. The action is riveting. I am on board.
