The Mighty Nein Review

The most interesting thing about tabletop role-playing games is how detailed and intricate the lore of an established universe can be. The Mighty Nein, surrounding the world of Exandria, a fictional world created by Matthew Mercer in 2012 for his personal Dungeons & Dragons campaign, proves how astonishing and deeply enticing these games can be, as well as the unbridled nature of the imagination. The series, thus, feels lived-in and fleshed out thoroughly, leaving viewers, especially those in the know, to take great pleasure and immerse themselves in the experience.

Moreover, I think the series does a great job with the characters, who are all people with flaws and secrets. It makes for a very moving experience beyond the spectacle and the “saving the world” tropes because you want them to succeed and win in this huge battle after having gone through various difficulties. It makes the story feel grounded, and their more vulnerable moments add weight to the story beyond flashy action sequences.

For those who enjoy Critical Role, especially, The Mighty Nein will feel thoroughly engaging and exciting. The visual ambition is to look out for, and the adaptation’s offering of familiar voices, characters and arcs will bring much enjoyment to viewers. However, this is also where the series will falter for those who are not aware of the backstories, as a lot of it is tied to The Legend of Vox Machina, having been set 20 years after the incidents of that story. Since this series adapts the source material instead of creating something unique with it, it might not bring in users who are already not a part of the story.

On that note, the series might also feel boring and slow if, again, you don’t familiarise yourself with the lore. There are some spaces where I found myself a little lost, because you need some specific information for everything to make sense together. But, apart from that, this one will intrigue and excite viewers for the most part.

The Mighty Nein is an exciting and compelling fantasy-anime hybrid that blends strong characters, ambitious world-building and emotional depth quite well. It might not be for fresh eyes, but fans will find themselves satisfied as it delivers something richer than your typical fantasy stories.
