The Lying Life of Adults Teaser: Giordana Marengo Wants to Know the Reason Behind Her Parent’s Hatred

The Lying Life of Adults Teaser unveils the Italian TV series which is based on Elena Ferrate’s novel of the same name. The six-episode series is directed by Edoardo De Angelis and stars Giordana Marengo as Giovanna, whose turbulent transition from childhood to adolescence against the backdrop of 1990s Naples drives the plot.

The official synopsis of the series reads, “Young Giovanna navigates her passage from childhood into adolescence as she experiences the different sides of Naples during the 1990s.” The search for a new face, after the happy one of childhood, oscillates between two consanguineous Naples which, however, fear and hate each other.

The Naples above, which has given itself a fine mask, and the one below, which pretends to be excessive, trivial. Giovanna oscillates between high and low, now tumbling, now climbing, bewildered by the fact that, up or down, the city seems without answer and without escape.

The series is written by Ferrante, De Angelis, Laura Paolucci and Francesco Piccolo. Valeria Golino, who starred opposite Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, plays a central role as Giovanna’s aunt Vittoria. Alessandro Preziosi and Pina Turco co-star as her father, Andrea, and mother, Nella, while Azzurra Mennella and Rossella Gamba play sisters Ida and Angela, friends of Giovanna’s.

In the trailer, it shows that Giovanna’s pretty face is changing, turning ugly, at least so her father thinks. Giovanna, he says, looks more like her Aunt Vittoria every day. But can it be true? Is she really changing? Is she turning into her Aunt Vittoria, a woman she hardly knows but whom her mother and father clearly despise? Surely there is a mirror somewhere in which she can see herself as she truly is.

Giovanna is searching for her reflection in two kindred cities that fear and detest one another. She tries to find out the truth behind everything and goes out to meet her aunt. She finds a person in her with whom she can confide and talk about everything, but will she be able to find what she is looking for or get mired in a story that was never hers to begin.
