The Law According to Lidia Poët Trailer: Exasperation Runs High As Lawyer Navigates Sexism in 19th Century Turin

A new Netflix original is here, and The Law According to Lidia Poët trailer explores what it’s like to be the first female lawyer in Italy whilst facing sexism and blatant discrimination. Starring Matilda De Angelis, Sara Lazzaro, Dario Aita and Nicolo Pasetti, among other cast members, this series is directed by Letizia Lamartire and Matteo Rovere.

Watching the trailer, it becomes clear that there are some reservations about this new lawyer in Turin, ready to solve a case. Speaking to clients and the people around her, she seems to get a sense that it will definitely not be simple to convince all these people that she can do it. Netflix’s description for this show reads, “In this gripping period drama, Lidia Poët investigates murders while fighting to practice law. Inspired by the true story of Italy’s first female lawyer.”

The trailer shows a woman walking into a courtroom with her head held high. While most people seem concerned that she wants to become a lawyer in the first place, she doesn’t let this resistance deter her from the journey she has chosen for herself. Once again, the religious misogyny confirms God’s hand in deciding professions for different genders, and clients are more likely to avoid working with her.

Her exasperation comes in when people not only start telling her off for doing something like this but also question her capabilities as a person investigating a murder. Observing fingerprints, exhibiting exemplary deductive skills and using new technology to back her case, Lidia has made an impression on everyone she meets.

For a woman in the 19th century, Lidia defies all expectations by taking not only her profession but also her sexuality into her own hands. Finding love and having her bodily autonomy in this show is exciting to see.

What seems like a mixture of Enola Holmes and Bridgerton, this show tells an interesting story with compelling characters. Rife with optimism, some good cheer and a little period action, this show brings to life a personality most people wouldn’t have heard of.
