The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2 Recap

The episode starts with Abby and the gang waking up to find the town in front of them and feeling very unprepared for the battle that they are about to face. While Owen tries to find a way to convince Abby to go back and abandon her plans for revenge, Ellie expresses that, regardless of her beef with Joel, their relationship will never change. However, she is a bit taken aback when she learns that he has already gone out on patrol with Dina.

Ellie and Jesse go out on patrol eventually after hashing things out with Seth, while on patrol, Abby spots Joel and Dina alone in the mountains. As a storm brews over the mountains, Ellie and Jesse take cover in a nearby town and learn more about Eugene while Abby tries to follow Joel and Dina but comes across the bodies of several infected. She is left horrified when they come back to life and makes a run for it, with a huge horde following her. She makes it to safety in the nick of time but finds herself cornered.

Just as things are about to take a very dangerous turn, Joel shoots and kills the infected and saves her. In a rather strange turn of events for her, she is left indebted to the very person she wanted revenge from, but there’s no time for chit-chat. As the horde tries to break through the door, Abby tells them about the lodge where her crew is at and without any other options, they rush towards the lodge.

Meanwhile, the others get worried for Joel and Dina as they are nowhere to be found, and when Ellie learns about this, she and Jesse rush to the Copper Mines to find them. Back in town, the townspeople find the Cordyceps strain alive and thriving inside the pipes.

It’s time for action in the mountains as the infected horde rushes towards the town, pushing everyone to jump into action. It’s a thrilling few minutes as the town swiftly and expertly gets into action to kill the infected, but they breach the perimeter anyway. In the midst of pandemonium, as the townspeople get slaughtered, Tommy is shocked to find a Bloater who is seemingly unbothered by fire! Of course, it goes down in the end, but not before taking up an entire can of gas!

On the mountains, the Fireflies take Dina hostage the moment they learn about Joel and start to threaten him. After putting Dina to sleep, Abby asks Joel about the last place he saw the Fireflies and then promptly shoots him in the leg. She then talks about her life and how Joel killed her father, and then proceeds to beat him to death with a golf club. Ellie rushes into the room right then and watches Abby stab Joel to death. She vows revenge and ultimately holds his dead body as the Fireflies walk away.

Jessie eventually arrives to take them away, and as the town celebrates the win over the infected, Ellie is left sobbing at the turn of events.

Well, what a heartbreaking turn of events for our protagonist, whom we have come to love and cherish. Despite his flaws, Joel was an impactful character, and Pedro Pascal brought him to life unlike anyone ever could. Warm yet fierce, Pascal’s portrayal of Joel is spot-on and will leave anyone drawn to him. Thus, his death, although expected, comes as a heartbreak for everyone.

I loved the action in this episode as well, and what the future holds now that everyone knows about the infection’s hibernation patterns. It was a thrilling ordeal through and through and will leave most viewers on edge. What a tragic turn of events this one has brought, and the emotional implications that this will have are yet to be seen. How will Ellie get her revenge? Will it follow the story of the video game or go its separate ways? We will have to wait and see. Also, what the heck are those special effects, stunt work and set designs?! I am in awe!
