The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 Recap
The episode starts with Hanrahan talking to Park and reminding her of why she decided to execute one of her men with a war on the horizon between them and the Scars. She tells her about the hospital raid that they took out on Hanrahan’s orders, ending with the horrible realisation that the infection might be in the air. Hanrahan congratulates Park on a job well done and, while walking out, offers her condolences for losing her son.
We then move to Seattle, and on day 2 of Ellie and Dina’s revenge arc, we see Dina trying to figure out the WLF soldiers’ bases while Ellie reminisces about Joel. The two of them decide to be reckless after Dina charts a map for them to follow, and they find more Scars executed on the street. Ellie gets anxious about dragging Dina through this mess, but she recounts the first time she killed a person and then tells her that this mission is what matters – getting revenge for Joel matters.

That night, they make their way to a WLF hideout and after confessing their love for one another, the two of them set to to face some infected through a seemingly abandoned building. Of course, they run into a smart infected and eventually realise that there are more than they can handle. Ellie lures them away from her, but they become too much to handle eventually. As they get overwhelmed, Jesse suddenly appears out of the blue and saves them.
As they make their way into a park, Jesse tells them that he and Tommy have come to get them back home. Ellie tries to push back, but they suddenly find themselves in front of a Seraphite ritual where they brutally execute a WLF soldier. Dina is eventually shot by an arrow, and they decide to run for their lives. However, in the course of running away, Ellie finds herself right in front of the hospital where Nora is located and makes a beeline for her.

She confronts her, which eventually leads to a chase, and the two end up at the blocked-off B2 section. It’s shocking to see the state and the scope of the infection around her, and more so when she finds people still alive and being absorbed by the fungi. Either way, she finds Nora wheezing on the floor, and she presses her for information on Abby. Nora tells her what Joel did to Abby’s father, but she refuses to budge.
In a fit of rage, Ellie tortures her for information, and the scene cuts to Ellie waking up in bed and Joel walking into her room like old times.
The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 Review

I need more information, and I need it now! The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 is somehow a very emotional watch, more so because Ellie’s rage is apparent in every scene. That last scene is so moving and heartbreaking that it’s hard not to get swept up in her revenge plan. However, what is most impressive about this episode is the fantastic special effects – everything inside that hospital is a visual treat, and you are immediately transported to a different world as soon as the scene starts.
Not only does the series do a fantastic job with the storyline, which is full of dread and hope in equal measures, but it also delivers a stunning treat for technical nerds who will be left mesmerised. Bella Ramsey and Isabela Merced deliver fantastic performances once more, and Ramsey’s emotional portrayal of Ellie is a win in every scene. It’s easy to love her and root for her, and Ramsey requires ludos for that.
With the cliffhanger ending this week, I can’t wait to see what is next for Ellie. Does she find Abby’s location? And what is it with that last scene? Are the spores causing a hallucination? We will just have to wait and find out.
