The Indrani Mukerjea Story Review: Netflix Documentary Lives Up to Its Hype

The Indrani Mukerjea case is such a highly publicised saga and it’s less about Sheena Bora’s murder than it is about Mukerjea herself which is a shame. Mukerjea, a media baroness at the time, is arrested 3 years after Bora’s death as a sister murders another sister, so when the truth about their relationship comes out, it instantly becomes a sensation at the time. The case still remains equally baffling now, but maybe a little less murky because most people already have an opinion about the case and rightly so.

The Indrani Mukerjea Story Review

The documentary is, if nothing, absolutely delicious. Regardless of where you stand on the case, the way it is presented, the people that they have asked to take part and present their side is impressive and reels you into it. However, it does make you feel a little icky because, although the documentary is well-made and looks great, it feels really made up. When Mukerjea comes on-screen, it gets even more questionable because you don’t see the sincerity in her words or actions and neither in the documentary per se.

The Indrani Mukerjea Story makes you question why it is named as such – why are we learning about Mukerjea when we should be learning about Bora? We spend a lot of time making the Sheena Bora murder case a basis of the story but we don’t get into that; we get Mukerjea’s story and her thought process and it gets a little weird after a while because this is a woman who has been accused of murdering her daughter. It’s a little baffling to watch the documentary with that accusation in mind.

Of course, questions are thrown around towards others in her life and we listen to different accounts from their mouths as well. With different people, including her two children, giving their two cents about everything and giving interesting context to make audiences even more confused (or maybe making up their minds), the most interesting words, however, might just be from Indrani herself, whose cold and scripted responses don’t make you have too much faith in its biases. Also, she interestingly blames everyone around her for everything in her life going wrong, but never really points out if she ever did anything wrong.

The Indrani Mukerjea Story Review

But, to its credit, it’s not like the documentary blatantly showcases that Indrani is a saint. Thankfully, we do see different perspectives with many of them pointing their fingers and questioning her authenticity. It’s an even split which I am happy to watch and helps in at least balancing the scale. Now, if we question whether or not Indrani Mukerjea deserves the attention that she will get through this documentary that will probably differ from person to person.

I think we have seen time and time again that documentaries, just because they tell a real story, aren’t always unbiased or even true. Thus, watching this with a grain of salt is extremely important. That being said, I found the series to be emotional as well, at least if you see it from Mikhail Bora’s perspective. Regardless of the truth, the guy looks really affected by his sister’s death and it moves you in a way and makes you believe his side a bit more. There’s a sensitivity in the documentary that I wasn’t expecting, especially in regard to how it handles its different characters connected to Indrani.

The Indrani Mukerjea Story Review: Conclusion

The Indrani Mukerjea Story Review

For lovers of true crime who have taken an interest in the baffling Sheena Bora murder case, the documentary will come as an interesting watch. Whether you believe Indrani is a murderer or not is probably up to the courts to decide but we can only sit behind our screens and assume the truth at this point. However, the documentary is surprisingly delicate in handling the different points of the case and does a good job of balancing its different arms.

  1. Well written!! Just finished watching the show. This is shameful and disgusting why to release the story with “the woman” when the case is still not closed by supreme court. It’s less of a story and more if a image clearing advertisement.

    • I think at this point, most (definitely not all) documentaries are meant for the clicks and to stir up drama. But I am somewhat of a cynic!
