The Glass Dome Ending Explained
The story starts with Lajla coming home after learning about her adoptive mother’s death from her adoptive father Valter. The small town opens up a lot of old wounds for Lajla, who was abducted and trapped in a glass chamber for days on end when she was very young. Although she was able to escape, the ordeal left a deep impact on her. Thus, when her friend Louise ends up dead and her daughter Alicia disappears, Lajla becomes obsessed with solving the case.
She takes her retired police officer father’s help to get to the bottom of this, but finds herself running into one roadblock after another. However, she soon realises that the motive behind the abductions isn’t sexual, it’s about power. The person who is abducting these children is going after a particular type — long brown hair and a certain build. Lajla surmises that it must have something to do with the abductor’s past, that somehow they would’ve felt powerless in a situation, and this is their way to regain power and control.

Who is the real culprit?
The real culprit, we learn in The Glass Dome episode 6, is Valter! In a shocking turn of events, Lajla and the audience learn that her own father, whom she trusted so much and the person who seemingly rescued her all those years ago, is the person behind all of these deaths. Although Lajla, upon finding an old photograph of Valter and Tomas, suspected Tomas of being the perpetrator, considering his affair with Louise and the fact that he had her phone, because of how much their mother resembled the victims, she was left in absolute disbelief.
Who is Martin?
While searching for Alicia, Lajla runs into Martin, who seems like a sweet and sensitive man whom she takes a liking to. He is apparently in town to take part in the search, but soon it turns out that he’s just been discharged from a psychiatric institution where he was sent after a failed kidnapping stint. He tries to copy Alicia’s ordeal by kidnapping another young girl and then tries to kill Lajla too, but his efforts are thwarted when Lajla makes a run for it, and the police find his flat.
He is later found brutally murdered, seemingly by Valter, for daring to become a copycat.

Why was Lajla abducted?
Although we don’t understand why Valter did what he did, the reason he abducted Lajla is that, having spotted her years ago at a bonfire party, he was obsessed with her “fiery” attitude. After the abduction went awry, he adopted her, and thus, to him, he possessed her. However, addictions can never remain hidden for too long, and her return to the town and imminent departure triggered something in him once again.
What happens in the end?

In the end, Lajla is trapped in the glass box once again, but this time with Alicia. With Lajla in front of him, Valter proceeds to cut Alicia’s hair off while Lajla begs him to spare the young girl. However, Valter refuses to budge and proceeds to kill Alicia by asphyxiation. Outside, Tomas finds something fishy in Valter’s behaviour, especially after finding the childhood photograph. He circles back and then goes to Lajla’s room, only to find a dead police officer.
After calling for backup, he goes into the adjoining barn and into the basement and is shocked to find Alicia and Lajla passed out. Valter asks Tomas to kill him, but he seemingly shoots his leg. We then cut to Lajla visiting Valter in prison to find out where he disposed of the other bodies. He gives her a cryptic answer, but Lajla understands immediately. In the last scene, she looks on as the police find the bodies of the other young girls from the river that they frequented.
