The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 11 Review- Collateral Damage

There is a lot going on in the show at the moment, and not all of it is good. The show feels like a melting pot of a bunch of characters and plot points, which would be a great thing if their association made any amount of sense. We are heading towards a finale, but it feels thrown together and not very well imagined for a show with this many character dynamics. In a sense, it seems like an attempt to feel bigger than it actually is and trying to set up more than what is feasible.

The events happening in the show right now are decent, even great, in isolation. Let’s first talk about them in isolation before considering their cohesion. The first of them is very casual and just as much fun buying the TV. It is nice that the show is still sticking to its roots and attempting some slice-of-life elements alongside everything that it has got going on. It is really great at this element, and the very well-written and snappy dialogue also helps this section feel a lot more natural, considering how unbelievable the show’s premise is.

There is Emilia and her conflict with existence itself, being a half angel and half human dealing with what she has been taught since she was born and the world she sees now. Her conflict is a great way of developing her character, especially since she has been a remarkably sturdy and unshakeable character otherwise. Her constant resolve to be the one to end Maou was always going to change for the show’s story to make sense, and doing it this way makes a lot of sense. She was on the search for more shards of Yesod in this episode, which she easily found to be more trouble than it was worth.

There is also Heaven, Ente Isla, and all the supernatural beings that originate from there from time to time to wreak havoc on Japan. This is the shakiest segment of the story by far, as it is paced horribly, too vague and shifty for its own good, and only makes sense in bits and pieces when you try to forget all that you already know about the series. We don’t know much about what goes on there, but that’s mostly a good thing, as not much of what goes on there is very interesting. Well, there’s Alas Ramus, but that’s about it.

This episode saw all three of these storylines mix, but not as you’d expect. There were some unintended but serious consequences of the sonar we saw a few episodes back, which served as a catalyst for these events. It’s just that some of them mixed like oil and water, and it stood out when one aspect ended and the other began. The TV segment didn’t mix well with the supernatural one, and the romantic sub-plot between Ashia and Suzuki felt hamfisted and abrupt here. The finale has not been well-built at all.
Verdict
The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 11 was a weird episode that was worse than the sum of all of its parts. The series is failing to make a lot of sense at this point.
