The Chestnut Man Season 2 Ending Explained

Who is the k*ller? What was their real motive?

In episode 5, we finally learn that the real perpetrator is Thea, or Signe, one of Marie’s close friends. The incident ties back to the first mu*der that we saw in episode 1 years ago when her father, Thoger Staal, mu*dered three kids and left one of them in a nest. The incident broke her family apart and pushed her mother to leave for Poland, leaving her in an orphanage. From there, she grew up and got married, but her marriage, too, broke down because her husband, Roy, was having an affair.

Unfortunately, Roy and their two kids were k*lled in a devastating accident and, as a result, she was suffering from a psychological breakdown wherein she was obsessed with the cases of divorces due to infidelity at her job at the Agency for Family Law. She took these betrayals as a personal insult and went forth taking revenge, following her father’s modus operandi.

Why was Emma involved? How was everyone connected?

In a rather devastating turn of events, we see that Emma, Marie’s daughter, who was mu*dered 2 years ago, had an affair with Roy that broke Thea’s marriage apart. She took revenge on Emma for that and k*lled her, holding her responsible for her losing her family. In the end, Mark figures out that Thea met everyone through Agency for Family Law and picked her victims when they came to her for conselling or for their divorce negotiations.

Why was Naia k*lled?

While investigating the case, she realises that one of the victims, Ditte Kolster’s husband, Peter Hougard, wasn’t mentally sound and was obsessed with his wife and kids. When he hears that she might get full custody of their kids, he rushes to get Ditte, and Naia follows the devastation he leaves behind, with bodies piling up at the Agency for Family Law. In the confrontation in the end, Peter shoots Naia, and she bleeds out on the floor, while both Peter and Ditte are mu*dered by the real perpetrator in the end.

Does Mark find the real k*ller?

Battling against beauracracy who want to pin the entire thing on Peter, Mark pushes back and tries to get the real culprit for Naia and the others. Thankfully, he gets to Signe/Thea when DNA reports tell him that Thoger Staal’s DNA was found under Emma’s nails. He immediately realises that it must be his descendant and remembers that he had a daughter. Going through the orphanage where Thea was last reported to be as a child, he gets the address for Thoger’s summer house, where he finds Thea and Marie.

A confrontation ensues, during which Mark is gravely injured. Thankfully, Marie mu*ders Thea before she can k*ll Mark, ending the cycle once and for all.

In the end, Mark takes Le in and becomes a parental figure for her, giving up on running away and choosing to stay to become a dependable part of her life. Throughout the series, we see Thea’s transformation from when she was young – without the proper support and anyone dependable in her life, she suffered from several mental health issues and became bitter and obsessive. However, with Mark doing the right thing and becoming a place of dependence and comfort for Le, as well as Marie taking responsibility for her crime, even if self-defence, it showcases to the younger generation that it’s fine to stumble and then pick yourself up. That despite the obstacles, family will always stay right beside you.
