The Big 4 Review: Wild, Hardcore and Absolutely Hysterical

The Big 4 is an action-packed Indonesian movie about four retired assassins who team up once again, to settle some scores. The film is directed by Timo Tjahjanto and written by him and Johanna Wattimena. Moreover, it has a total runtime of two hours and twenty-one minutes.

The complete cast of the flick includes Abimana Aryasatya as Topan, Putri Marino as Tina, Lutesha as Alpha, Arie Kriting as the sniper Jenggo, and Kristo Immanuel as Pelor. Furthermore, Batara Goempar serves as the cinematographer while Dinda Amanda heads the editing department.

The film starts with a conventional introduction scene, where all the assassins go full gun blazing, and lead into an epic rescue mission. This is where we get a first look at Topan, the leading gritty muscle power, Jenggo the pitch-perfect sniper, the no-nonsense Alpha, and the usual bait, Pelor.

Furthermore, after the demolishing mission, the gang meets their mentor and leaves the debris of destruction. And it is soon revealed that the four siblings cum assassin gang, was brought up and raised by the mentor, who also has a daughter named Tina. The situation between the group and their mentor changes drastically when they learn that his daughter is about to become a cop, and it’ll be better for him, to retire at last.

However, the plot thickens when the mentor gets killed, and the aftershock sends everyone into a complete frenzy. What happens next, is a thoroughly loaded combination of humour, action and idiosyncrasies.

The kind of action that you’ll get to witness in this hardcore Indonesian action flick, is almost a class apart. There are literally people blowing up like cartoon characters, and it doesn’t feel gore or unsavoury. In fact, the humour curtails the effect of the graphic scenes and translates the impact into an adventurous ride.

The first half an hour of the flick might ooze out vibes of another traditional wannabe Kill Bill type. But the rest of the screenplay does a great job of riling up against the stereotype. And produces a final product of fresh and strongly active ingredients.

Usually, there is no space for actors to shine in a completely action-oriented movie. And almost all the characters are left up to the fate of the final fight. But The Big 4, manages to highlight Topan as the effective protagonist, and Antonia as the deadly villain (at least until the climax). All in all, the movie kicks off all the prejudice for action movies right off the window and leads to an entertaining, hilarious and unexpected ride.
