The Beginning After the End Overview
The Beginning After the End is a popular web novel series created by TurtleMe, with illustrations by Fuyuki23. Initially serialized on Tapas in January 2017, the story quickly gained traction, leading to a webtoon adaptation. This was also illustrated by Fuyuki23, which began in July 2018. The English version of the webtoon is currently published by Yen Press, with seven volumes available as of March 2025.
The story received an anime television adaptation by Studio A-Cat, officially announced at New York Comic Con in October 2024. Directed by Keitaro Motonaga, with scripts by Takamitsu Kōno and music by Keiji Inai, the anime premiered on April 2, 2025, as part of Fuji TV’s +Ultra block. The show features “Kingsblood” by Kala as its opening theme and “Mahiru no Tsuki” by Seiza as its ending theme. It is available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
The series centres around King Grey, a powerful and emotionally distant monarch who meets a mysterious end. He is reborn as Arthur Leywin in a magical realm called Dicathen. This new life offers him the chance to experience a childhood filled with warmth, magic, and purpose. These are all the things he missed in his previous existence. Armed with the wisdom of a former king and raised by loving parents, Arthur embarks on a journey of growth and redemption.
The Beginning After the End Episode 3 Review
Today’s episode started with Arthur waking up in a strange place after taking a bad fall. He comes face to face with a monster and becomes very scared of this situation. However, this monster is not there to harm him as she’s the one who saved him in the first place. Arthur also realises how badly injured he is, and the monster advises him not to move as much. She gives him shelter and even feeds him with all the fruits that grow in her lair.
We finally get to know that her name is Sylvia, and not much is discovered about her. She is very powerful, as she can use magic while gathering mana at the same time. Apparently, this is very common for mana beasts but not that much for humans. She decides to teach this aspect to Arthur and even asks him what his goal is for learning this magic.
However, the answer she gets is not something that she likes. As Arthur was pretty cruel in his previous life, he without any hesitation claims that if he learns the power he will kill the bandits, but that is when Sylvia imparts some very important life lessons to him. Later, we find out that Sylvia has her own problems and the series takes a different turn.
Now, even as someone who has not read the webtoon, I can tell that this is a pretty bad adaptation because it literally does not explore any important bits. It also introduces characters who might be important for the story but doesn’t really clarify who they are and what they’re doing. Apart from that, let’s not forget about the absolutely horrible animation that literally hurts the eyes.
Verdict
I absolutely did not like this episode and do not think anyone should watch it. Just read the webtoon, which is far better than this abomination of an adaptation. The only good thing that can come out of this is that it can convince people to go and check out its source.
