Surf Girls Hawai’i Review
It’s exciting watching surfing, even if you are someone who has no idea about the sport. Surf Girls Hawai’i is an inspirational and very engaging series wherein we see these up-and-coming surfers finding their footing and winning over the world with their talent and hard work. However, just because we follow these girls doesn’t mean that we see a manufactured reality wherein they all win all the time. The girls compete against each other and others, and more often than not, they face failure. Interestingly, we never see them sitting with those feelings of failure.

That’s what makes Surf Girls Hawai’i such an engaging watch – these are human stories where we are shown the dedication, the sweat and the tears that these young ladies put in to actualise their dreams. Winning and losing, although heartbreaking, is also a part of the game, and they aren’t afraid to embrace it and learn from it with their eyes on the future.
The docuseries showcases these human stories really well, and the sequences are done in such a way that the action is contextualised with the girls’ personal lives and what goes on behind the scenes. Without these moments, the series would probably have lost its charm and would definitely not have been this engaging. I couldn’t look away from the screen for a moment and was left to wonder what happens to whom in every single tournament. Every tournament is showcased with much care, and we see each girl’s performance equally.
This makes us rally behind everyone – the story thus does not showcase one person’s journey, but a collective journey wherein the girls represent their culture, heritage, their bonds together, as well as their individual aspirations. The amalgamation of these feelings is excellently brought forth, and, somewhere in those 4 episodes, we are left deeply connected to every surfer riding the waves.

On top of that, battling the big, bad ocean is also not an easy feat and an incredibly dangerous one, if we are being honest. I was in awe of how brave these women are as they go out in the open ocean and just surf without a second thought. Most of us (including me!) would be absolutely horrified at the thought of going out that deep into the ocean, so more power to the girls for being so connected to the ocean and the waves. It will definitely give you the confidence also to overcome your fears and apprehensions and take a risk.
We are also given a beautiful friendship to follow throughout the runtime of Surf Girls Hawai’i, which speaks volumes about the athletes and their bonds with their culture and heritage as a whole. Throughout the 4 episodes, everyone is constantly building each other and giving each other confidence, regardless of whether or not they compete against each other. It’s great to watch women support each other, especially in difficult and taxing situations. Their bonds are explored quite well and will make the audience feel a part of the pack as well.
Surf Girls Hawai’i Review: Final Thoughts

Surf Girls Hawai’i is a great watch for people who want to dive into an interesting sport with a touch of human stories behind it. The docuseries is a short and sweet ride but packs the right punches and emotions and will leave you feeling inspired and hopeful.
