-Succession Season 4 Episode 1 Recap Does Contain Spoilers-
The season opener starts with Logan’s lifeless birthday party attended by all the nodding heads inside his fraction, including Gerri, Frank, Hugo, Tom and Greg. As usual, the celebration takes the form of a business deal with the Pierce family, set on the brink of completion. Moreover, as Logan eyes the best deal he gets interrupted by the rogue bunch (Kendall, Shiv, and Roman).
After getting dismantled by their father, the trio of Roy siblings finds themselves looking for investors for a new venture in the media industry. And even though the group pretends to be serious about the project, it turns out that only Roman was willing to pursue the idea till infinity.
As a result, when Shiv gets the hunch that his Dad has shown another interest in buying out the Pierce media, she pitches the idea of liquidating their assets after the GoJo deal and establishing themselves as the frontrunner for the bid. Kendal picks on the idea but Roman becomes slightly unsure as he had already made up his mind about the newfound business idea.
Soon enough, the trio arrives at the Pierce household and finds themselves amidst a bidding war with their dad. Meanwhile, it is also revealed (mostly during phone calls and exchanges) that Shiv and Tom are going through a separation, and that his attempt to sabotage their takeover plan ended on a tough note for their marriage.
Alongside, we find cousin Gregg, transitioning from the shy and awkward family member to the new playboy of the group. The alleged victim of Greenpeace brings an unusual date for the part and involves himself in slightly disgusting trouble (mostly in parts with his banter with Tom, calling themselves the ‘disgusting brothers’).

When the bidding war initiated, Logan offers a negotiable six billion dollar deal which he is also willing to extend to a seven. However, the rogue siblings outdo themselves and start their side of the deal with a solid 8. Notably, the Perice family head takes the advantage of this Roy clan tussle and makes the trio of siblings stretch their end of the deal with as much as a 10.
Ultimately, Kendal-Shiv-Roman turns out to be the winning party and is also successful in beating their dad, even if it meant burning a whole lot of extra assets. Notably, this small yet poignant moment of victory over the big daddy Roy does give them a reason to celebrate.
In the last part of the episode, we get to see an emotionally heavy encounter between Shiv and Tom. Both of them decide to not discuss the intricacies of the fallout, and simply loom around the broken aspects of their relationship.
Succession Season 4 Episode 1 Review

The episode serves as a fulfilled reminder of what Succession is all about. And manages to introduce the very element of back-and-forth thrill, right from the start. It’s not like the season opener serves as a punch in the gut, but it sure does lead into the room for one in the upcoming instalments.
As usual, the subtext is quite visual during the Pierce bidding war, as Logan celebrates the mundanest of birthdays. The media mogul, in a way, gets in contact with the kids, while the aftermath of the deal plays out. Moreover, we also get a closer look at his corrupt principles, which identify people as ‘economic units’ and a simple loss-value concept.
What serves as the triumphant part of the episode, isn’t the ten billion dollars deal, but rather sections of scenes from a marriage. The complete end segment between Tom and Shiv makes up for the lack of conversation around their relationship and leaves room for further conclusion in the upcoming episodes.
The season opener does a great job of establishing the Roy family saga and makes up for the meaty start to the last season. All in all, there’s absolutely nothing which should prevent you from watching the best in Television unfold.
