Spy x Family Episode 18 Review: Fiona Frost’s Feelings

The 9th episode of Spy x Family was everything that an excellent slice-of-life anime should have. Now, without further ado, let us jump right into the review and see how this episode went.

Spy x Family Episode 18 Overview

Even though shounen giants like Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War, My Hero Academia Season 6 and Chainsaw Man are all airing this season, Spy x Family stays strong amongst the top dogs with an unconventional storyline and interesting characters. The series is based on the hit manga by Endou Tatsuya, which combines action with family-centric comedy.

After the successful first season, it was only natural that we would get a second season for the Forger family. The anime is back with stunning animation, clearly influenced by the triumph of season 1 and a fast-paced storyline that will never cease to amaze the audience.

Furuhashi Kazuhiro directs the anime, and on the other hand, Wit Studio, CloverWorks is in charge of its animation. “SOUVENIR” by BUMP OF CHICKEN is the opening theme, whereas “Shikisai (色彩)” by yama is the ending theme.

Spy x Family Episode 18 Review and Recap: Yor’s Competitor

Today’s episode of Spy x Family was definitely one of the most interesting ones yet. We finally saw a love rival of Yor, who is very much in love with Loid and can go to great lengths to be his wife.

The episode first starts with an interaction between Fiona and Sylvia, where Sylvia tells Fiona not to get any ideas of involving herself with the operations Strix.

Fiona is a spy of WISE, just like Loid, and her code name is Nightfall. She is a skilled spy who is personally trained by Loid or Twilight. From the beginning, we get the feeling that she thinks highly of him and respects him maybe a bit too much.

Next, we see her at the Forger residence, where she meets with Yor for the first time. Fiona purposefully picks a time when she can have a one-on-one meeting with Yor without the presence of Loid, as he was absent at that time with Anya and Bond.

From the inward monologues of Fiona, we realise just how much obsessed she is with the idea of becoming Loid’s wife. And she tries her best to make Yor feel that she is not fit for Loid.

She even almost lies to Yor that Loid complains about her at the workplace, but at that moment, Loid enters and interrupts her. Anya reads this new lady’s mind, and she also understands Fiona is in love with her father.

In the end, Fiona scares Anya when she thinks about how she would have been a better mother to Anya as she would be able to strictly supervise her into making fewer mistakes. Anya definitely does not like the idea, and she is quick to voice her obvious adoration for her current mother, Yor.

This episode was very entertaining. We got introduced to this new character who has a dynamic personality and can be a potentially essential supporting character. Being a Yor x Loid shipper, I definitely do not support Fiona’s ideas of being with Loid, but I cannot deny that she is interesting to watch.

Verdict

This episode again solidified Spy x Family as one of the best slice-of-life comedy anime ever. It knows how to pull its audience with a great storyline and intriguing characters. Even though this anime does not really have a romantic angle, it makes you root for the main couple nonetheless. Watch Spy X Family on Netflix.
