Something From Tiffany’s Review: A Dull Christmas Love Story

Something From Tiffany’s is an Amazon Prime Video film starring Zoey Deutch as Rachel Meyer, Kendrick Sampson as Ethan Greene, Ray Nicholson as Gary Wilson, Shay Mitchell as Vanessa, Leah Jeffries as Daisy, Jojo T Gibbs as Terri Blake, Javicia Leslie as Sophia and others. Directed by Daryl Wein, the screenplay is by Tamara Chetna from the story based on Melissa Hill’s novel of the same name. The cinematography is by Bryce Fortner, and the editing is done by Casey Brooks.

The synopsis reads, “A Christmas romance, the film follows two couples whose lives are irrevocably changed when a simple christmas gift swap from Tiffany’s makes them cross paths with each other.”

Something From Tiffany’s Review Contains No Spoilers

Something From Tiffany’s is set in New York during Christmas. The story starts with Ethan and his daughter Daisy buying a ring for his girlfriend, Vanessa, who resides in LA. At the same time, Gary arrives at the Tiffany’s to buy earrings for his girlfriend, Rachel. Outside the shop, Gary meets with an accident, and Ethan runs to help him. Their Tiffany bags are accidentally exchanged. Fate makes Rachel and Ethan meet, and they build a good bond. Here, Tiffany plays cupid for individuals who are already in a relationship. How will the story end, Ethan, Rachel, Gary and Vanessa? Well, we all know how!

Christmas and cute, romantic love stories go hand in hand. One wants to sit in the comfort of a warm blanket, enjoy a hot cup of coffee and watch adorable, delightful movies. Something from Tiffany’s is made with the purpose of warming your hearts. Sadly, it fails in doing so.

The onset of an unexpected love story is filled with enthusiasm. We see our protagonists cross paths and meet each other without knowing how their lives won’t be the same in the end. However, the film’s second act should have given us reasons to root for the couple, the weakest of all. The screenplay loses its grip, and there are no endearing moments to leave us with a smile. The conversations between Ethan and Rachel are superficial, and there is no chemistry between the two.

Something from Tiffany's Still 1

The weak chemistry and lack of good romantic elements tremendously affect the overdramatic climax. We are not strongly convinced that Ethan and Rachel belong with each other. It happens only because that’s how most romantic holiday stories end. Even though the couple has a happy ending, there’s no happiness packed for us to really celebrate love.

It is not the first time we see a white lead having a person of colour as their best friend. Actor Jojo T Gibbs as Terri’s purpose in the story is nothing but to be a cheerleader in Rachel’s life. Terri has a partner too, but they barely have any meaningful scenes. I hope this trend ends someday!

Coming to performances, Leah Jeffries as Daisy is my favourite character. She isn’t the lead but was most likeable. Actor Zoey Deutch as Rachel sounded a lot preachy while talking about life and relationships. Kendrick Sampson, as Ethan, is not written with a lot of depth. We are told to follow his story only because he is the male lead. These drawbacks certainly affect the actors’ chemistry as Rachel and Ethan.

Something From Tiffany’s Movie Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, Something from Tiffany’s is a love story of fate that lacks love. Despite the colourful, sparkly, festive set-up, the romance is dull throughout.

The movie is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
