Quick Recap

The second episode begins with the tension between Ye-jin and Matthew, who are both stuck on the narrow road with their respective vehicles: a car and a tractor. Ye-jin then proceeds to continue with her swollen feet, a broken car mirror and finally an embarrassing bus ride. Matthew helps her up after she falls, and even stands up to the bus driver when he acts recklessly.

Back in Seoul, pressures rise at HIT as Director Dong pushes for Ye-jin’s collaboration with L’Etoile, despite the company and Ye-jin sharing a very disturbing past that involves Song Myeong-hwa. We see flashbacks showing how a faulty product that Ye-jin promoted caused someone great problems, which have now led Ye-jin to endure guilt and shame.

Then we see scenes of Eric Seo that show his sweet feelings for Ye-jin, and a flashback reveals Ye-jin missing out on the scheduled meeting she had with Eric Seo, which left him sad. Then, back in the town, a lottery win ultimately lands Ye-jin at Matthew’s house, and the confrontation part 2 happens. It’s hilarious between the two as they bicker and promise to never see each other. It doesn’t last though.

The end of the episode shows Ye-jin deciding to move with the collaboration, only for us to see Ye-jin on a late-night call, lost in tears and pain.

Performances

The story proceeds pretty beautifully in the second episode. Won-bin is doing great as Ye-jin by showing the balance with confidence and vulnerability. Her bold exterior hides her exhaustion and pressure. Moreover, her bickering scenes with Matthew Lee are absolutely fun to watch. To add, the way Won-bin expresses the breakdown towards the end of the episode shows how raw and genuine her acting skills are.

Ahn Hyo-seop as Matthew Lee excels in calm and composed acting. His expressions are small and minimal, but that’s what makes the character live. His silent annoyance best fits our female lead’s loud screaming. Eric Seo, played by Kim Bum, is a feast to watch. His romantic touch adds an emotional layer to the story, and his love for Ye-jin seems genuine and strong.

The supporting cast is also doing a great job. Most importantly, the village elders bring happiness via the humorous content in the story. They add charm to the series.

Themes

The compelling theme in this episode is co-existence. The difference between city and rural life is emphasised here. The way Ye-jin feels embarrassed to ride in a bus shows how comfortable she thinks she is in the city, whereas for Matthew, a simple tractor is enough to navigate his life. Ye-jin’s life is fast-paced in the city, whereas Matthew’s life is relaxed and has a charm.

Then comes the theme of redemption. Ye-jin struggles with her collaboration after her past scandal, which collapsed her. Likewise, we see hints of failures in the past for Matthew when he tries so much to redeem his mushrooms. Both characters have gone through something that has put them in their current situations.

Then loneliness is another theme to look into. Even though Matthew lives a chaos-free life, he isn’t fully happy. He has something running behind his mind, and he is all alone. Ye-jin is completely alone, with lots of pressure and stress. Then we see Eric Seo living a lonely life, wishing and yearning for Ye-jin.

Direction and Editing

The balance between humour and emotional core is well done. The timing for comedies makes the episode lighter, and the emotional storyline adds a layer of tension well. The lighter moments feel naturally shown and aren’t heavily forced. This helps in building the bond between the characters seamlessly.

The transitions between Seoul and Deokpung are handled smoothly, which shows the duality of life. The flashbacks are really working well, as it’s high time we get to know about the characters’ past. Not too much, but just the right amount of past to see the characters from a different perspective.

Editing-wise, the pacing is mostly steady, though certain transitions, especially in the city corporate life, feel a bit bland and straightforward. Other than that, great job.

What Is Missing?

Some areas need to be explored in this series. Say for instance, the tension between Ye-jin and Myeong-hwa is established, but a little more details could’ve have saved us some extra scenes in the next episode. I felt there were some scenes in episode 2 that weren’t making any difference in the plot, but neither was disturbing it. So if we had cut those scenes and added more flashbacks, in the following episodes, we’d have had space for more engaging subplots.

Then we see Matthew’s backstory, still feeling empty. We can see he’s mysterious and that he has something going on, but just not what it is exactly. Eric Seo’s unfailing love for Ye-jin is also something we’re yet to find out why.

Final Thoughts

Sold Out On You episode 2 does its work on becoming a great premiere week. Humour, emotion and character sketches are well presented. Matthew Lee and Ye-jin’s bond has also started to unfold.

What makes this episode stand out is its ability to humanise its characters. Ye-jin is not just a corporate baddie but is someone with guilt and shame. Matthew isn’t a rude farmer, but is someone trying to forget a hard past. Eric Seo has returned with a motive to get the woman he loves.

With its charming rural setting, neat characters, and slow-burning storytelling, the drama continues to promise a heartfelt ride.
