Apex Review
In Apex, an emotionally and physically torn Charlize Theron battles a (human) predator in the Australian wilderness. Climbing, jumping and swimming through harsh terrain, things get very serious, very fast, showcasing the lead actors’ skills, while trying to entertain audiences.
What works
The film’s environment is tactile and immersive, and pulls you into the setting quite easily. The rugged terrain acts as something more than a backdrop – a hurdle that Sasha has to overcome to find safety and peace on the other side. The fast-paced storytelling fits right at home and helps to keep the tension alive. Apex knows what it wants to be and delivers on it.

The performances, too, are quite good, with Theron delivering a physically and emotionally demanding role with grace and grounding the character for us to root for. Although there are moments when the script lacks in the character department, Theron continues to push forward with conviction. On the other hand, Taron Egerton, as the antagonist, is also quite engaging and rides the fine line between terrifying and cartoonish. His character is quite cliched, but Egerton does a good job with it.
What doesn’t work
As with every movie in this day and age of the survival action thriller genre these days, Apex is predictable with very few surprises. And, as always, the antagonist’s motivations are hardly present, with their only goal being to be a predator for predator’s sake. That might sometimes be interesting and even terrifying, but it’s overdone to a fault at this point. The emotional beats, too, feel obvious and forced with the setup created for the thriller to exist and not the other way around. This is a formulaic thriller that is entertaining if you can adjust your expectations.

Apex Ending Explained
What happens in the ending?
The finale of Apex showcases a complete change in the hunter and hunted, as Sasha turns into the predator and takes control into her own hands. Trying to outmanoeuvre Ben, she uses whatever she has in front of her and her hiking skills to outsmart him and stop him before he kills her. Using her instincts and the terrain against him, the two get into a relentless pursuit through the wilderness, but this time with the script flipped.

In the showdown in the end, she confronts Ben, and the two engage in a thrilling fight that is raw and engaging, leaving the spectacle behind and showcasing the emotions that Sasha feels after Tommy’s untimely death. In the end, Sasha kills Ben, but the victory is mentally and emotionally exhausting, bringing an end to the hunt that has defined the film.
What does the ending mean?
The film focuses on Sasha’s isolation after Tommy’s death and the guilt that she feels that threatens to consume her. She fights against these feelings and the heartbreak of surviving in a situation where she chose to save herself. Ben might just be the physical representation of the chaos and guilt that she has carried with her, as she reclaims her agency with Ben’s death. She chooses to fight against everything that threatens to take her down in a time when fleeing would’ve been easy, creating a defining moment and a clear choice.

What happens to Sasha?
After defeating Ben, Sasha laughs – exhausted but finally triumphant in this uphill battle, hitching a ride to the police station to help them get back the bodies of all the people Ben killed. Afterwards, we see her calm and her mind free of all burdens as she lets go of Tommy and the guilt. Ben forcing her into a life-or-death situation made her reassess her life and her survival – she is not just a mere spectator who got to live, she has every right to be alive and live to the fullest.
