Smiley Ending Explained: Who Does Alex Finally Fall in Love With? Will There Be a Season 2?

When the Christmas season comes around, we can expect a lot of romantic movies and series to pile up. Adding to our collection, Smiley is a Spanish rom-com series set during the Christmas season. It technically isn’t a Christmas tale, but it has the essence of the season and exceptional love stories. Yes, not one or two; it has around four love stories to look at and learn from. Exclusively, to find out how the couples worked out, here’s Smiley ending explained just for you

Directed by David Martín Porras and Marta Pahissa, Smiley is a series about two gay men, Alex (Carlos Cuevas) and Bruno (Miki Esparbé), who find it hard to find their true love. Alongside, the series also shows the love lives of a lesbian couple and a heterosexual couple, along with other interesting characters. The series has a total of 8 episodes, each about 40 minutes long, and is available in English audio as well.

Smiley Ending Explained: Alex Ends With…

Obviously, without a doubt, Bruno. Come on, mate, they were meant to be. Good things take time, so between Alex and Bruno, things went extremely crooked, but finally, they both ended up together. After meeting at the bar for the first time, Alex and Bruno quarrel like a couple and end up having a long night of nasty sex. To their surprise, both of them enjoyed it, but their egos clashed, making them both deny their feelings.

As days go by, Alex gets hit by Ibra (Cedrick Mughisha) while Ramon (Ramon Pujol) tries his best for Bruno. When Alex tries to give Bruno a shot, to his surprise, he spots Bruno kissing Ramon. But the truth is, Ramon throws himself at Bruno. Due to the misconception, Alex proceeds to date Ibra, and Ibra does treat Alex wonderfully. On the other side, Ramon is a sweetheart, and Bruno gets loved intensely by Ramon. However, neither Bruno nor Alex feel the zing.

Towards the end, when Bruno confesses metaphorically in the bar on New Year’s Eve how he feels without Alex, Ramon overhears it. Expectedly, Ramon breaks up with Bruno, leaving him to cry on the street, feeling like a failure. Meanwhile, inside the bar, Ibra spends his New Year’s night with Alex, but Alex clearly feels the vibe off as his mind races about Bruno.

Days pass and Bruno understands that he has to move on. Alex tries his best to love Ibra, but he still feels distant. Ibra plans a vacation to his hometown with Alex so that Alex can meet Ibra’s parents. This terrifies Alex, even though he accepts it. On the day of departure, Alex gives Bruno one more shot and sends a long voicemail about how he is feeling. Bruno, who hears the voicemail, rushes to the airport, but it’s too late.

Feeling heartbroken, Bruno returns to his home but hears Alex’s voice. Alex reveals that he has ended his relationship with Ibra and wishes to be with Bruno. With tears welling up in both of their eyes (and in mine, too), Bruno and Alex share a long kiss in the middle of the road, causing the cars to pause and honk their horn at them. Oh boy, was the kiss good because those two guys didn’t give a damn about blocking the road?

What About Other Characters?

Speaking of Vero (Meritxell Calvo) and Patricia (Giannina Fruttero), they go through a lot of ups and downs. They try an open relationship; they try to practice activities to feel the couple vibe, but they still struggle to make it work. In the end, we see them both confessing their love and deciding to continue chasing their dreams to feel authentic. We don’t know whether they broke up, as they clearly say they love each other; they’ll probably take some time off and explore. Vero did promise Patricia’s mom, so I don’t think the couple will end their relationship that easily.

The other couple, Albert (Eduardo Lloveras) and Nuria (Ruth Llopis), also come to a wonderful revelation. Albert finally realizes that lately, he has been getting too angry at his wife due to his personal stress. He quits his architect job at his father-in-law’s firm and decides to pursue his painting passion. He then visits the bar (where Alex and Bruno are) on New Year’s Eve and apologizes to Nuria on stage. Why was Nuria there? She signed up to cater the bar for the night, so when she was working, Albert confessed his love, and they both shared a kiss. The married couple once again finds their lost spark and leads a happy life.

Will There Be a Smiley Season 2?

Though there isn’t any official confirmation regarding season 2, many viewers wish for the series to come back with another season. As we do not know what is going to happen next in the lives of Alex, Ibra, Ramon, Bruno, Albert, Nuria, Vero, Patricia, and others, another season can help the viewers have another perspective. Furthermore, Ibra and Ramon did not receive justice, so showing their lives and how they move around can really add to the plot.

While we wait for a season 2 confirmation, stream Smiley on Netflix and enjoy the love story this Christmas.
