Shafted Review

The plot of the show follows a group of four friends who face sudden changes in their lives when their masculinity and patriarchal thinking are hurt by the women in their lives. This leads them to face various troubles when it comes to their relationships and professional lives, but will they ever be able to get through it? This comedy show takes these themes and brings about a series of laughter, fun, and intriguing scenes that are hard to miss.

There is no doubt that the series has tried to get together a light comedy while handling themes of masculinity and changes in a relationship that comes about because of this. However, the series is truly lacking in what it is trying to bring to the audience. It’s more of one side versus the other kind of plot where we see two sides trying to justify themselves and prove the other wrong.

An open mind is definitely needed when watching this show because there’s a lot happening here which may not make sense to everyone. Even the concept of feminism is brought into the plot to make it maybe “interesting” and “relatable” for the audience, and while it does succeed to some extent, it doesn’t save the overall picture of the show.

Shafted: Guillaume Labbé and Olga Kurylenko

Yes, it is not completely a male-centred plot trying to put a gender down (with just a couple being the saving grace from this happening) it doesn’t shy away from doing this exact thing. It tries to show the feelings of a male who’s been the patriarch of the house, but when things go wrong in his life, how he tries to keep things from falling apart. But once again, it ruins it with the way these men move on to be.

Meanwhile, the raunchy vibe of the show takes over a lot of the jokes and discussions shared, the nude scenes, and more. And indirectly involving underage individuals in these themes doesn’t really sit well with me. The plot is really messy to quite an extent and while it is entertaining for many parts, the overall vibe of this show will leave you thinking what on earth happened?!

Moving on, the performance of the cast was without a doubt on point and made me like and hate some characters. They not only brought out a wonderful performance but also kept the characters as real as they could get. Finally, the cinematography also was well done and you could easily follow the story as it went by. There was no confusion when it came to these parts, which I appreciate more than the plot.

Summing Up

Shafted brings an intriguing comedy that is unrestrained, open, and filled with themes that still exist in the world today. While the plot may be hard to get by, the show is entertaining as long as you are not easily hurt by the many jokes floating in the show.

Watch Shafted on Netflix.
