He first appeared in the War of the Wolf, the eleventh book of the series but had a significant role till the end of the story. He will be joining the war as well but by the looks of it, his actions might affect Uhtred’s family to a tragedy. In the visuals we see him and the soldiers fighting in the war with people dying on each side & a bloody sword is also seen, along with a rope tie hanging in the woods. If anything it suggests the loom all around. Following that Aethelstan seems saying that something is underway and he will do the bidding of the lord.

We see that Uhtred is left with no choice but to fight as one character asks him to choose a side. To win a war, one has to choose alliances deftly and when an alliance comes seeking Uhtred’s help in their plans, he faces a choice between those he cares for most and the dream of forming a united England.
Towards the end, we hear the dialogue that suggests the characters preparing to face the inevitable war and it depends on them – which side they are standing on. But if united they can win over anyone on the opposite end, otherwise, they all might go back to the age of darkness.
