Disney+ Hotstar has released the dream documentary series for every football fan. Save Our Squad With David Beckham is a 4 episodes miniseries following the journey of David Beckham coaching an East England Under 14 Football Club through the Echo League.
Directed by Sean Doyle, the series documents David Beckham as he comes back to where it all began in East England. It is an emotional journey for the football player as he feels re-connected to his roots through the Westward Boys.

Save Our Squad With David Beckham Plot
The documentary is a single plot series which entails the struggling phase of an Under-14 East England club, Westward Boys, as they enter the Echo League and hit rock bottom. Watching them struggle through the league, Beckham decides to step in and guide the boys through their difficult phase.
We see an observant coach in the retired player as he has already done his homework and has pictures of the boys with their names written below the pictures to remember the names. David also has his input for each of these players, which he shares with David Johnson, a former Manchester United Academy Teammate.
As he enters the dressing room of the boys, that’s where the change begins. Like a true coach, Beckham has his words of wisdom for the players and their performance. He is there through their training sessions and helps them both on and off the pitch.

David Beckham admitted in the miniseries that being a coach is something which is out of his comfort zone. But, he turns into a coach, a godfather and most importantly, a best friend for the boys and excels in each of these roles. He’s not just beautiful on the outside but inside too.
Throughout the series, David relates with the kids and uplifts them with his own football moments, and fans get to see flashbacks from the player’s history on the field. Be it the time he broke his meta tarsals before the World Cup, his Penalty Kick in the 2002 World Cup against Argentina or his First Day at Manchester United, the series has mentioned David’s most memorable moments.
The first episode of the series is named He’s Coming Home which shows Beckham re-living his childhood memories. In the second episode Stepping Up, David steps up as the coach and motivates the kids. The third episode, United, shows him as a coach, guiding the kids to unite and show team spirit. In the last episode, Never Give Up, the star player has an important message for the world, to never give up on their dreams and work hard.
As for the cinematography, the crew has really aced it. We see not only Beckham’s larger-than-life moments, but the Westward Boys have also become a star club through the miniseries. The elements of surprise embedded in the documentary leave the audience teary-eyed.
It is an overwhelming series. It is more than just a documentary. It shows who David Beckham really is, and boy does this man win our hearts with his personality! He speaks one on one with each one of those kids and not just with the team as a whole. David sees a kid struggling, he reaches the kid’s house to address the issue with him and his parents personally.
One thing that we know for sure, David Beckham makes for an excellent coach and parent. His conversations with the kids, the way he recognises each one of them, and their talent and personality show what a doting father he must be to his kids. Beckham organised a match between the kids and their parents to motivate the kids and give them another reason to win the game.

In just 4 episodes, the series also highlights some important issues like racism and knife crime. Kuro, one of the players, is also a poet whose poem, “Black ain’t Beautiful”, moved Beckham, and he spoke at length about the issue. Under the star’s guidance, the players imbibed a team spirit, and the Westward Club became an inclusive community, a family.
Beckham has gone all out. He gave time to this documentary. His efforts and dedication towards the making of this miniseries show how disciplined the former player is in his life. He has stayed true to his values and has given his fans an up close and personal look into his childhood through the Westward Boys.
The series ends on an emotional note. Beckham gives medals to the kids for their impeccable performance in front of their parents. Ahead of their last game of the season, David also surprises the kids with a goodbye gift and an emotional note.
Whether or not you are a football fan, you must watch this series if you aspire to do big things in life. David Beckham is a treat to the eyes in the documentary. Like a true royal, he has maintained his calm and has a charming personality that is just heart-touching.
