Romesh Ranganathan: The Cynic Review: The Vegan Comedian Makes Us Laugh Through The Pain

Romesh Ranganathan officially makes his Netflix Special debut through his stand-up comedy show Romesh Ranganathan: The Cynic. He takes us on a journey of laughs and giggles by turning his real-life experiences into comedy. Sharing his various experiences from lockdown to veganism, he is not only funny but relatable to the audience as well.

The show was written and performed by Romesh Ranganathan. He is also the executive producer of the show along with Flo Howard and Benjamin Green, the director. The Netflix Special consists of 2 episodes: one is the main performance with a runtime of 62 minutes, and the second is a behind-the-scenes episode with a runtime of 30 minutes.

Romesh decides to take the last tour show back to his hometown Crawley, England. He performed a sellout show in the Hawth Theatre.

Netflix’s synopsis of the stand-up comedy special reads:

Returning to his hometown of Crawley, England, Romesh Ranganathan riffs on veganism, his kids — and offers a peek into the making of his comedy special.

Romesh Ranganathan: The Cynic Review Contains No Spoilers-

Son of immigrant parents from Sri Lanka, Romesh is known for his self-deprecating comedy. He often also includes the scenarios that he has been facing as an immigrant and as a person of colour living in London in his comedy sketches. But this time, he delves more into his personal life and his experiences as a father and a husband in his performance.

He starts off the show by taking a dig at Will Smith for the Oscar incident, where he physically assaulted Chris Rock for making an insensitive joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. He conveys that comedians in the present times cannot make the jokes they like anymore because someone or the other might get offended by them.

Speaking of offensive jokes, Romesh was not an exception from it. Casually making jokes about sexual assault is not funny anymore. In the year 2022, influential people should learn to be more sensitive towards such topics involving victims who suffer every day.

That being said, the entire show was not all that bad. The comedian uses his vegan lifestyle and talks about how uncommon the practice is in reality. He also talks on the subject of different cultures and how it differs from region to region. He also addresses the issue of selective outrage from people, especially the ones who criticizes the customs of communities from different countries.

The comedian also gives us a peek into his hometown and the life he leads there in the second episode. Giving us a glimpse of the entire process of making his dream a reality. Before the show, there were not many expectations from himself or his family, they were all still in denial.

Along with his mother and brother, he takes a tour of his school and how his life was before becoming famous. A small-town school teacher who was unsatisfied with how he was living, he struggled hard to reach where he was at the moment. He also expressed how he wanted to perform the Netflix Special in his hometown, to pay an ode to the place where it all began.
