Revenant Episode 5 Recap
Hae-sang watches a video and learns about the Jangseungs and their significance in bringing/barring the dead. Apparently, Jangseungs are wooden signs that are used to mark destinations for travellers. Hae-sang figures that the village lady has changed the Jangseungs and summoned the wandering ghosts to Baekchol so she can meet her dead daughter. Hae-sang then plays the ritual sound through the neighbourhood’s speakers so he can go and find the crafted Jangseung without ghosts attacking him.

Meanwhile, San-young has a short conversation with her dead father and learns that he didn’t willfully pass the curse on her. At the same time, Hae-sang spots the Jangseung and axes it down. Finally, the wandering ghosts leave the village. Hae-sang admits an unconscious San-young to the hospital. When she regains consciousness, San-young tells Hae-sang about her conversation with her dead father. They both realise that Gang-mu was also possessed by the evil spirit, but the means are unknown.
At the hospital, San-young confronts her mother, Gyeong-mun, regarding the lies, and the latter reveals a story about the unborn child. When San-young’s mother was expecting her second child, a possessed Gang-mu threatened to kill it. Out of fear, Gyeong-mun sought shelter at her mother’s place, but Gang-mu eventually fulfilled the curse. After losing the child, Gyeong-mun visited her mother’s place only to witness the old woman jumping into the well before warning her to stay away from Gang-mu.
Gyeong-mun then eloped with San-young to Seoul and cut communication with her husband. After learning this truth, San-young asks for more details at home. Gyeon-mun talks about her meeting Gang-mu for the first time as well as the Jangjin-ri story that Gang-mu shared with her. This revelation shocks San-young.

Meanwhile, Hong-sae meets with Mun-chun and proves that all of the recent suicide cases with the burnt wrist marks have a connection with Gang-mu. Mun-chun takes the evidence and visits Hae-sang to discuss it. Hae-sang then confirms that Gang-mu was possessed and his letter and will for his daughter were forced to be written by the evil spirit. Hence the burnt wrist marks are nothing but the evil spirit’s hand prints.
Just then, San-young visits Hae-sang. Hae-sang bids bye to Mun-chun and hears about the Jangjin-ri story from San-young. Seems like there was a tradition in Jangjin-ri where the villagers would evoke a juvenile spirit by sacrificing the second child to avoid a disaster. Sadly, Mokdan was sacrificed by her entire family, and it wasn’t just a simple missing girl case. The evil spirit that currently possesses San-young is the little girl Mokdan. We aren’t 100% sure yet, but San-young and Hae-sang believe that she is the one.
San-young receives a text, and her behaviour changes. As she leaves Hae-sang’s office, the viewers find that Woo-jin, who used to hang around Hae-sang, is a dead spirit. He believes San-young couldn’t see him, but when she walks down the stairs, she smirks, meaning the possessed San-young indeed saw him. Woo-jin becomes thirsty for San-young’s youth, and Hae-sang condemns him. Woo-jin then snaps at him by stating that Hae-sang is the reason behind his current state.

Back to San-young, she receives a text from Semi saying that she has passed her civil exam. San-young, who didn’t write the exam due to the mess, becomes emotional. Additionally, Semi texts that she is at the senior girl’s wedding celebration and asks San-young to come. We know that the evil spirit fulfils San-young’s desire no matter what.
Though San-young can’t afford a good dress for the celebration, she is a humble person who understands her reality. But the evil spirit disregards the morals and goes for whatever San-young’s “id” urges. And so, the possessed San-young kills a famous influencer, takes her credit card, and dresses elegantly. She reaches the wedding celebration and shocks everyone. Since she is possessed, she acts extremely disturbing towards Semi as well. When San-young comes back to her senses, she runs away from the celebration, and Hong-sae follows her.
San-young reaches the bridge and asks the demon to stop talking to her. At the same time, Hae-sang visits Gyeong-mun’s mother’s place and digs a spot where there was a rope tied. Over there, he finds the object that was buried by his late mother. A perplexed Hae-sang wonders how the object came to this spot while the possessed San-young at the bridge says, “You found it.”

Revenant Episode 5 Review
Honestly, Kim Tae-ri outshined in this episode. In the previous episodes, I personally didn’t find the evil role fitting her cute petite face because whenever she pulled a vile smile, it looked funny (because she looks beautiful). However, in this particular episode, especially at the wedding celebration, the way she seductively spoke to Hong-sae, sarcastically threw shade at the bride and Semi, etc, changed the game. Instead of simply smiling, Tae-ri showcased how a possessed woman who just killed someone would look cold-blooded.
Regarding the story, the viewers now know what causes the evil spirit to start possessing people, and we also find that Gang-mu was chosen by the spirit since he had knowledge about evil spirits. Through Gang-mu, the spirit started to latch onto people until it reached Hae-sang and San-young because they were the perfect people who will work according to her plans.
We’re still unsure why Hong-sae and Mun-chun are also pulled inside the ghost mystery. Yes, they’re simply doing their police job and are trying to find the evidence, but it feels like Mun-chun might be a bad guy. He is quite serious about finding the pieces, which makes me wonder if he is trying to stop/hide something.

So far, there isn’t any romance between Hong-sae and San-young, but the scene where the possessed San-young whispers seductively into Hong-sae’s ears will flutter fans’ hearts. We’re halfway down the series, so one can expect more answers in the upcoming episodes.
