Ramy Season 3 Trailer: Stuck in a Spiritual Crisis in the New Age Jersey

Starring the Emmy nominated director Ramy Youssef, Mohammed Amer, and Hiam Abbass, Ramy Season 3 is set to premiere on Hulu this September. The show has been created by Youssef himself and the trailer for the upcoming third season has been released by Hulu today.

The new season of the dramedy will be featuring ten episodes and is set to revolve around the much relatable escapades of the titular protagonist and his family. Originally from Egypt, the Hassan family has now immigrated to New Jersey and struggles to strike a balance between their faith and religious ideology and the existential crisis of the millennial generation.

An excerpt of the official synopsis released by Hulu for Ramy Season 3 reads:

In the third season, his family is forced to confront having lived a life dedicated to worldly concerns — and in some cases, lies — while Ramy all but abandons his spiritual journey, instead dedicating himself to him and his uncle’s diamond business.

Ramy is a positive departure from the prevailing stereotypical representation of Muslim Americans in the Western mainstream. Many Muslim immigrants have lauded the work of Youssef as they relate to the main character’s spiritual crisis in New Jersey where several newly emerging ideas contradict the ones propagated by his faith, putting him in a “spiritual debt”.

As seen in the trailer as well, he stutters to reply to the question “Do you believe in God”, he’s well aware of the fact that he needs to find his place in this evolving world in order to help his family. However, the difference between who “they (all) want to be” and “who they really are” is a gap they can’t seem to bridge easily.

The third installment will be picking up the ropes of the unfiltered representation of the first-generation Egyptian-American family who is stuck in a personal, political, and religious upheaval in this comedy. The striking unnamed presence of Bella Hadid in the forthcoming season is also bound to wow the audience.
