Queens on the Run, aka Fuga de Reinas, is a new Mexican Netflix film. Directed by Jorge Macaya, the story is penned by. Martha Higareda. It stars Paola Núñez as Famela, Valeria Vera as Estrella, Alejandra Ambrosi as Marilú and Martha as Paty. Alexis Fridman and Mirian Higareda are the executive producers.

Queens on the Run is a movie about 4 women named Paty, Marilu, Famela and Estrella. Paty and Marilú feel underappreciated by their husbands, despite doing everything their men expect out of them. Famela is a successful businesswoman who doesn’t have enough time to romance her husband. However, she wants to have kids as soon as possible. Estrella is the only single woman in the group who is carefree but desperately looking for a man.
These women are bored with their mundane life and decide to take a road trip and tick off the bucket list they made years ago. Paty and Marilú don’t inform their husbands about the trip. However, their road trip adventure turns into a series of unfortunate events. Nothing goes according to their plans. Yet, all the strange and deadly adventures somehow help them rediscover themselves. Is it worth watching? Read the review to find out.
Movies about road trips are often about self-discovery. They help a person see life through different lenses. Just driving without worrying about the destination is a kind of peace people often desire. The new Mexican film on Netflix also aims to do that. But the road trip is less of an adventure and more of a mess.
A few mishaps with the ladies initially build your curiosity about what’s next. However, all the fun is taken away with the introduction of a gangster. The 4 women, who made such big plans, dress up as sex workers to seduce the gangster. They fight together as a force, and well, they realise their potential as individuals. Is it so easy? Also, if they were weary of men, why have a man play a key role in their story?
Netflix’s Queens on the Run doesn’t care to show us the real side of women. They have pretentious and loud personalities from start to end. For example, Estrella, who seems to be a big flirt, loses control over a male cop throughout the movie. The ladies talk about how a woman should not change her assets to please a man. The entire conversation is negated when they dress up as sex workers to seduce and capture a gangster. Are cops so bad with their jobs in this movie?

The movie does not provide any single factor that pushes the women to understand and love themselves again. Yet, the ending is played out as an inspiring element, where these women tell other ladies to be the lead of their own stories. But are these queens even the lead of this movie? It seemed like things just kept happening to them, and nothing was in their control. During the entire road trip, they did what others made them do.
Queens on the Run Movie Review: Final Thoughts
Queens on the Run is a lousy attempt to show women going on a road trip and having the best adventures of their lives. They took the road trip to escape from their dull lives, away from the men. Yet, their story ends with capturing a man and being saved by another man (a cop). It starts off on an exciting note. But midway, the road trip loses the fun track and goes in a bizarre direction. Even though it’s a light-hearted movie, they should have done it right if they intended to inspire in the end. Except for Paty, no women in the story discover anything about themselves.
