Mrs Undercover Review: Radhika Apte Starrer Looks Like a Parody of Spies

Mrs Undercover Review: The new Zee5 Hindi film stars Radhika Apte as Durga, Rajesh Sharma as Chief Rangeela, Shah Chattopadhyay as Deb, and Sumeet Vyas as Common Man. The rest of the cast includes Laboni Sarkar, Biswajeet Chakraborty, Roshni Bhattacharya and Aman Mehra. It was written and directed by Anushree Mehta and produced by B4U Motion Pictures.

Zee5’s Mrs Undercover Review Contains No Spoilers

In Mrs Undercover on Zee5, a serial killer named Common Man kills independent and educated women. He hates seeing empowered women and believes they should adhere to the “traditional” values where they work in the kitchen and live for their husbands, kids and families. The Special Force assigns Durga, a simple housewife and mother in Kolkata, the task of catching the Common Man.

Durga was a special undercover agent before her marriage and spent years waiting to get assigned a secret task. Her dreams finally come true. However, as a married woman, her difficulties include getting her job done while not “offending” her narrow-minded husband, Deb. How will Durga carry out this mission? Will she find out who the Common Man is before he kills more educated women? We find out everything in the end.

On paper, the idea of showing one serial killer named Common Man killing educated women and having a housewife as an undercover agent on a mission to catch him must have sounded perfect. But the execution is laughable. It isn’t easy to take anyone seriously in the movie.

Mrs Undercover Review 1

The tone of Mrs Undercover is light, but it tackles a serious issue. Whenever the narrative would take a serious turn where people would express their problems with Common Man’s thinking, it would look overly preachy or funny. Even the Common Man seems very little dedicated to his mission. He has no threatening aura.

The major issue with Mrs Undercover is how they’ve shown the agents. Radhika Apte and Rajesh Sharma act like they’re doing a parody of agents. Their dialogue and acting are overly loud and unfunny. Apte, who has a penchant for playing characters with deadpan humour, fails to impress you in this slapstick comedy.

The movie had a lot of potentials to highlight the issue of the Common Man’s regressive thinking towards women in a much better and more impactful manner. Sadly, it gets worse during the climax. The entire Durga dance sequence to hunt the killer down is questionable. After preaching so much about the sick thinking against empowered women, the director compares women with goddesses. Women are human as people of any gender.

Mrs Undercover Movie Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, Mrs Undercover movie is extremely preachy and unfunny. It has no intriguing factor, despite having an amazing cast. Radhika Apte’s Durga is often at the receiving end of obnoxious jokes. It seems like a progressive idea on paper but fails in execution.

The movie is now streaming on Zee5.
