Pro Bono Episode 2 Recap

This episode begins with David being completely overwhelmed by his situation, where he doesn’t understand what he should do to get out of his current mess. First of all, the people in his team are not at all the kind of lawyers he would want to work with. On top of that, the cases they handle are nothing but lousy small cases that make no money.

They have a case of a dog that was once abandoned by its previous owners, and now the current owners are refusing to let it go. A judge like him, who used to handle bigshot corporate cases, is now looking after these kinds of cases, and it just makes him angrier. This is why he tries to search for a weak link inside the team who can give him information about everyone.

He finally realises that the reason why Jung-in appointed him as an advisor for this team is that she has a clean reputation to uphold. If she manages to get this pro bono team properly working, the people who had been gunning to have her position will finally stop criticising her. This is why David strikes a deal with her. He says that if he manages to get the pro bono team’s success rate from 20% to 50%, he will become a justice candidate nominated by the Bar Association.

This is an extremely high favor that he’s asking for, but he also wins the wager because he knows that this law firm has never received any praise from the public before, so they need his help. They desperately need to rebrand their image as a law firm that actually cares about public interest and has a better name in society. Thus, Jung-in agrees to this proposition, but David must deliver a 70% win rate instead of a 50%.

Now, back to the dogs case, David gets to see that the people who are up against him are pretty strong, as they have powerful ties. This is why David appoints a former judge as an additional attorney with whom he has good ties for this case. The judge of the dog’s case quickly gets himself out of the case, and then David explains to his team how the judge and the opposition lawyer were friends, and that is why the case was going so well for the opposition party. But David stopped it from happening, as the current judge can not go against his own former colleague.

However, a new twist happens because David manages to prove that the person who took the dog actually threw the collar herself. She then breaks down in tears and reveals that the dog was fitted with a shock collar, and she was abused by her former owners, which is why she did that. After hearing this, David does not get affected, and he just straightforwardly claims that he will win this case. At the trial, he demands a jury trial, and the case just thickens from then on. In the end, things go exceptionally well, and David wins the case in a masterfully manipulative way.

I absolutely loved this episode and the way David handled the case. It is very refreshing to see that the hero is not just another stock good character and has a good yet manipulative side to him. The last twist was also nice.
