Ah the sweet taste of romance! Man Choi Woo-shik and Kim Da-mi look so adorable together I can’t have enough of them. But you know when things are too good they often crash and burn horribly and there’s nothing you can do about it other than clutching your heart and crying. Ung and Yeon-su, too, feel a bit overwhelmed with how happy they are and always feel like something or the other is going to happen that will shatter their happiness.

Another problem that seems to have cropped up is that Ji-ung is not responding to Yeon-su although the latter has sent him several messages related to work and such. Ji-ung’s colleagues, too, feel like something is going on with him. On the other hand, NJ looks a bit upset with her growing distance from Ung. Meanwhile, Ung’s time is spent trying to convince Eun-ho that things between him and Yeon-su are different this time around.

Yeon-su, at the moment, tries to find a newer side to her after reading a stupid online article. She talks to her near and dear ones to learn something about herself and about dating. That night, she decides to go out with Ung to try out the tricks that she learns from Ye-in. They really don’t work out in her favour and are hilarious to watch. Yeon-su is just so awkward, it’s adorable!

Either way, that night, Ung tells Yeon-su off for putting on a show so that they won’t break up. He assures her, in Our Beloved Summer episode 13, that she is new and different every time he meets her and that she doesn’t need to make such efforts so that things don’t sour between them. He assures her he likes her for who and how she is, but he doesn’t want her to nag about the same thing twice. They laugh and make up after that and decide to go to a pub for some hot stew and alcohol.

The next day, while Yeon-su asks her grandma to not go overboard about Ung, the latter decides to text NJ and thank her for her considerate reply to their dating rumours. She meets him that night to have a chat but is rejected again. NJ goes through a little tirade about liking him, but not that much and that they shouldn’t meet anymore if they can’t be together. However, she does tell him to call in case he breaks up again.

Meanwhile, Yeon-su pays Ji-ung a visit to his office in hopes of having dinner and chatting with him. At dinner, Yeon-su realises that Ji-ung isn’t engaging with her and he tells her that he’s just busy with work and a bit overwhelmed to do anything else. They go through the documentary footage and Yeon-su’s excitement at seeing her with Ung overwhelms Ji-ung, who asks Yeon-su for some time before he can meet up with either of them. Yeon-su leaves it at that, promising to meet when he is free.

Ung goes to meet Yeon-su’s grandmother that night, while she isn’t there, to have a chat. When Yeon-su learns of that she rushes to his home to ask him whether her grandmother scolded him. Instead, she learns that Ung didn’t graduate college. She is shocked and asks him why he spent so many years studying and paying tuition when he just left it all suddenly. He simply states that he didn’t see the need to attend university – he only did it for her. Things get a bit awkward, more so when Ung suddenly asks her why they broke up all those years ago.

In the epilogue, Ji-ung and Chae-ran discuss how his life is almost like Love Actually. Ji-ung tells her that, unfortunately, his life isn’t like a movie, it’s a documentary. He doesn’t know what will come of his feelings.

Final Thoughts: Our Beloved Summer episode 13

Still From Our Beloved Summer episode 13

Let me just start by saying that I am glad that our protagonists did not break up. And you know what? I have a feeling that this time around, instead of going the nuclear route, they are might just talk through their difficult feelings and come out victorious on the other side. It seems like there’s going to be some emotional discussions and situations in the next episode and the way in which this one ended, I am sure some form of discussion will go down. Either way, with three episodes remaining, I hope we get a satisfying ending that makes sense. Right now, it can go either way. But, with the two of them slightly more mature, hopefully, it goes down a more positive path.
