Habeas Corpus Ending Explained: What happens when the justice system fails to protect the innocent from the hands of the greedy? Netflix’s Brazilian legal drama explores that concept over the course of eight episodes and showcases the lengths that lawyers have to go to to have a chance to bring the innocent out of prison. As Inez and her students dig into every nook and cranny of Jonathan’s case, she also has to overcome the emotional obstacles from her past along with facing off against one of her brilliant students who has a persnal stake in the current case.

Does Jonathan Get Released?
The overarching story of Habeas Corpus follows an old case in which a young Black man, Jonathan, is accused of a violent crime that put him behind bars for years. Six years after the fact, Inez and her team’s tireless investigation brought the truth to light behind the case’s true situation – current Chief of Police Cristina Ogino, to land her current job, falsified evidence and forced Jonathan to be imprisoned with the help of his attorney to quickly get the case over with.
However, with new evidence, including Jonathan’s alibi and a shocking confession video, it’s proven that everything was simply a farce and that Jonathan was simply a scapegoat to further Christina’s career. After the truth comes out, thanks to a fresh statement by Helinho, who was also imprisoned for the same crime, Jonathan’s initial conviction is annulled, and he is finally freed.
Does Inez Win Against Tina?
While investigating the crime and its various components, Inez had initially never imagined that she’d fight against the Chief of Police, someone with a ton of power and connections. However, in this war against the system itself, Inez finds herself a winner after Tina gives a rather half-hearted and arrogant statement that is eventually proved completely false by the pile of evidence against her. In this fight against the inequality that lies within the heart of the justice system, Inez eventually proves without a doubt that Tina was completely wrong in her methods and the way she handled the case was illegal.
What Happens to Marina and Jonathan?
Throughout the runtime, we see that Marina and Jonathan find themselves growing closer to one another, especially because Marina takes the time to listen to his side of the story and believes in what he has to say. Before the final hearing, Jonathan confesses his feelings for her which she reciprocates. As a result, Silas breaks up with her after overhearing their conversation. When Jonathan is released, we see Marina waiting for him outside the prison, but we don’t see whether they continue to explore their feelings for one another.
Do Inez and Murilo Continue Their Relationship?
Inez and Murilo choose to remain friends after getting intimate over the course of the season a few times. While they will always have a soft corner for one another, Murilo chooses to stay with his wife after she tells him that she’s pregnant. However, their professional relationship continues to be close as Inez is once again invited back to the firm she had left years ago.
What Happens to Tina?
Tina faces the consequences of her actions after an investigation is conducted against her and she is removed from her position. The position that she had so cunningly attained ends up going out of her hands anyway. Moreover, Flávio and all three lawyers in the firm are also investigated, and Flávio loses his job as well.
Does Inez Look Into Eliane Linhares’s Case?
The ending scene showcases Inez back at the firm where all of her students are also working, and they are looking into all the wrongful conviction cases that have been sent their way. However, Inez mentions that the first case that they will look into is that of Eliane, Marina’s mother, the case that started everything in the beginning. From the beginning, we see Inez fighting the grief and guilt of putting Eliane behind bars and desperately trying to right her wrongs. However, Eliane had been completely against this. But now, with Jonathan’s freedom, she realises that she has hope and agrees to cooperate with her and Marina.
What Does the Ending Signify?
The ending is a happy one, giving hope not just to Jonathan, but also to Eliane. However, the tragedy is that Jonathan will never get back the time that he has lost behind bars and the mental and physical trauma that he’s had to go through. While the legal system corrects its mistake and gives Jonathan a chance at a happy life again, the devastation of losing 6 years will haunt him and his family forever. It’s the same with Eliane’s story but, in a way, it’s better than not finding freedom at all.
Is Habeas Corpus Season 2 Possible?
The ending also leaves room for another season, and one can predict that Habeas Corpus Season 2 will see Inez and Marina fighting for Eliane and the obstacles that they will face along the way. Moreover, we also see that the person who burnt the farmhouse down was none other than Marina, and Eliane was simply saving her. It’s bound to make things complicated for both mother and daughter. Will Marina have to face the terrible thing that she has done? Will she face prison? We will have to wait for Netflix to announce what comes next!
