We are just a week away from Oscars 2022. Ever since the pandemic in 2020, this is the first time The Academy Awards ceremony will happen in person again. The nominations look quite exciting this year. One of the films nominated for 7 categories, including Best Picture is West Side Story. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film stars Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez and Mike Faist. Sadly, Rachel isn’t invited to the awards ceremony.
In Rachel Zegler’s recent Instagram post, a fan posted that they can’t wait to see what she’s wearing for Oscars 2022 night. Zegler revealed that wouldn’t seem to happen. The actor replied, “idk y’all i have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening :’) i will root for west side story from my couch and be produ of the work we so tirelessly did 3 years ago.”
The West Side Story actor added, “I hope some last minute miracle occurs and i can celebrate our film in person. But hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, i guess. thanks for all the shock and outrage — i’m disappointed, too. but that’s okay. so proud of our movie.”
Netizens are upset to learn that the lead actor of West Side Story, which has received multiple nominations for Oscars 2022, isn’t invited. One person wrote, “the #Oscars are gonna be so sh*t this year. They’ve added the weird fan favourite film, the Oscars cheer moment, not presenting all the categories and they’re not even inviting Rachel Zegler, the lead of a best picture nominee.”
Another person tweeted, “Wait… what?! How the hell is @rachelzegler NOT invited to the #Oscars? ????????
For the first time in like EVER, 2021 had a multiple of amazing Latino-led films and here’s an opportunity to showcase our people in awards shows. I really hope @TheAcademy makes this right!”
