Notes From the Last Row Ending Explained

The Ending Changes Everything We Thought We Knew

For most of the runtime, audiences are made to feel that failed novelist and literature professor Mun-oh has found a model student in Lee Kang, whose story has woven a dangerous web around him. He is enamoured by his story of this seemingly unknown family and the way Kang presents it to him is so engaging that Mun-oh finds himself stuck to the story’s progression.

However, the twist arrives when Mun-oh finally realises that there’s a more personal aspect to Kang’s story that pushes Mun-oh’s obession into overdrive. When he realises that the boy that Kang has befriended and is living with is none other than his school rival Kim Su-hun, who is not only a celebrated author, but also married his first love, Ahn Eun-joo. As the story gets more and more sinister by the minute, Mun-oh is desperate to paint Su-hun as the villain and slowly loses objectivity, letting things get under his skin.

Who was Laying the Trap for Whom?

Throughout the runtime, it was never made clear whether Kang was manipulating Mun-oh or if it’s the other way around. In episode 6 we learn that it was Kang who had laid the trap for Mun-oh since the beginning and had planned to get him obsessed with his story, knowing all of his weak moments and situations. While Mun-oh was trying to use Kang to his benefit, hoping to break up Su-hun’s family and possibly get a novel out of it, he didn’t stand a chance against Kang’s extensive planning.

Why Did Kang Target Mun-oh?

We learn the reason behind this in episode 6, when Kang finally reveals how he is related to Mun-oh. 12 years previously, Mun-oh and Hyeon-suk went to an orphanage and Mun-oh invariably helped Kang out by letting him express his feelings about losing his family. It was a significant moment for young Kang, who learnt the power of storytelling thanks to Mun-oh.

However, what was significant in the young boy’s mind wasn’t so for Mun-oh, who was far too jaded and frustrated with his failures to ever do any good. As a result, he said several unpleasant things about Kang to Hyeon-suk, which the young boy overheard and this started Kang long road to revenge against the man who shattered his sense of purpose.

Kang creates a narrative surrounding the story such that he has Mun-oh almost crazed and believing that Su-hun is a philandering cheat who is about to murder his family. He rushes to stop the situation and save Eun-joo and Se-yun from Su-hun, but realises too late that it’s all a part of Kang’s imagination. As he stands in front of their house with fire engines and the police around him, Su-hun, Eun-joo and Se-yun arrive and are left confused and concerned for him.

Soon after, Kang anonymously publishes a post on their university forum about Mun-oh trying to defame Su-hun using him and forcing him to write a novel that he didn’t want to. He even mentions that Mun-oh might try to publish something soon about it. It cuts off every avenue for Mun-oh to rebuild his life and after Hyeon-suk leaves him as well for feel completely invisible, he is left alone. Even the university throws him out.

Why Does Kang Reveal the Truth After It’s Too Late?

It’s a powerplay by Kang – he knows that no one would ever believe Mun-oh after everything that he has done and he takes advatange of the situation by not only telling his “mentor” about why he did what he did, but also that nothing was ever in his control. Kang has been controlling every aspect till then and he is the person who brought about his ruin.

What Does the Final Scene Mean?

The final scene, where Kang appears in front of Mun-oh as he works at a library, showcases him asking for the defamed professor’s help with a story and a fearful Mun-oh asking what the story is. It implies that Mun-oh knows what Kang is capable of and is equally enamoured to know his next story and fearful of it. He can’t help but know what he’s cooking up, hoping to be inspired and feel alive like he once did. Kang, meanwhile, is possibly not done with Mun-oh yet and has a few more tricks up his sleeve.

Is Kang the Victim or the Villain?

Kang is both a victim and a villain. As a young boy, he had nothing but admiration for Mun-oh, who opened a new chapter in his life and inspired him to see and imagine stories. However, with Mun-oh’s betrayal, it opened up yet another avenue for him, one where he was forced to dismantle Mun-oh’s life just like he did his own. While he was wronged as a child, leaving a deep impact on the poor child, his response as an adult is equally disturbing. While, at the end, it’s Mun-oh’s own arrogance and selfishness that brought him down, Kang definitely pushed him over the edge, knowing all of his triggers.
