Nineteen to Twenty Episodes 1-3 Review: ’19 School’ Struggles With New-Found Affection in This Korean Reality Show

Nineteen to Twenty Review (Episodes 1-3): Also known as 19 to 20 , Yeolahob Seumul , it’s a new Korean reality show. Turning twenty from nineteen takes only a year, but Netflix’s new Korean reality series shows this transition in a whole new light. The change from teen to adult can be weird, and the show will explore this change through a group of Gen Zs. There are 8 participants and 4 people in the audience, besides us, namely Cho Kyu-hyun, Kim Ji-eun, Lee Su-hyun, and Jung Se-woon. The show has been created by Kim Jae-won, Park Su-ji, and Kim Jung-hyun.

Nineteen to Twenty Episodes 1-3 Review Contains Spoilers

Netflix has released the first 3 episodes of the reality show, and each one has a run time of almost an hour. Since it is a reality show, none of it is scripted, although I am having trouble wrapping my head around how the makers managed to capture them from so many angles, as some of the cameras are bound to come in the way of the participants.

If you know or have suggestions as to how it was executed, do let us know in the comments at the end of this article. The first three episodes show how the participants, their first impressions regarding the others, and how they get along. But there is one rule that they need to abide by. Will they be able to do that?

Nineteen to Twenty Plot

8 19-year-olds arrive at 19 School, where they will learn about the basics of adulthood that will come in handy when they turn 20 (adults). The whole endeavour will last for 7 days. But amidst all these new learnings, there is a rule that they will have to follow, i.e. no dating. Well, at 19 years of age, we are all vulnerable to our feelings, and it’s tough to disregard them.

Nineteen to Twenty Review Still

Once the 7 days are over, the 8 students move into the 20 House. This is where they will put to effect all that they have learned in School 19 as well as will be allowed to date, make memories and celebrate the beginning of their adult life. The question that lingers is that will they be able to hold back their feelings for 7 days? Sounds easy, right? But is it?

Nineteen to Twenty Review Episodes 1-3

Nineteen to Twenty Episode 1

It’s the first day of 19 School. Moon Se-yeon, Lim Jung-yun, Seo-yeong, Choi Seo-hyeon, Oh Sang-won, No Hee-ji, Lee Ji-min and Choi Ye-rin arrive at their new class. As expected, it’s pretty awkward because no one knows anyone. But then, slowly, interaction begins. Each of their introductions piques the interest of one or more of the rest, and they realise what they have in common.

Still exploring the new surroundings, the boys and girls come together respectively, and we find out who likes whom. This is after they have found out that they cannot date. So one can imagine where things are headed. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Liking doesn’t mean loving. But the catch is that the former can change into the latter pretty soon. Things start getting clearer when they are divided into two groups.

Nineteen to Twenty Episode 2

More activities and more interaction occur in Nineteen to Twenty Episode 2. These only reveal who likes whom more, and we share the excitement of the four viewers as they discuss how the participants are showing affection for each other. What adds to the realism is that we get to know what the participants are thinking as well. The girls mention the guys they like more than the rest, and vice-versa. But no sooner do they get comfortable with each other when two new participants arrive, Jeong Ji-woo and Kim Pyeong-seok. Will this affect the already established dynamics?

Nineteen to Twenty Episode 3

In Episode 3 of Nineteen to Twenty, more tasks follow. But in this episode, the participants get to ask each other questions without revealing themselves. This tells us a lot about who is more interested in whom. The makeup class brings people visibly closer, thereby proving that they are slowly getting over the awkwardness that comes with approaching someone they have just met. And it is nice to see them that way.

While there are some who are being bothered due to a particular thing, they are figuring out a way to get around it without making things awkward. The episode ends with a cliffhanger where Se-yeon has to choose between Ji-woo or Ye-rin for the next task, cooking. Ye-rin would like to have Se-yeon on her team, but only Episode 4 will tell what’s on Se-yeon’s mind. The date is December 27. 4 days remain till the 20 House.

Nineteen to Twenty Review (Episodes 1-3): Final Thoughts

Nineteen to Twenty has all the aspects of a reality show, but it’s too personal for me to be one. To share how you feel about a person to the entire world is only possible when either you know it’s all for a show, or it’s too casual for you. This thought immediately switches me off from all the visible likeness and affection that I see in the episodes. Now, if you tell me that it is nothing serious and just “training” for them before they step into adulthood, then it’s fine. But is it really?

Nineteen to Twenty Still 3 – Close

From the way they describe how they feel about a particular person, it seems that they are pretty serious. So they are seriously wondering about dating when the time comes, or they are casual about it. And then there is the third perspective, i.e. the participants are ready to fall in love and aren’t afraid to admit it. Well, that’s nice. Overall, Nineteen to Twenty is an interesting reality show, but I won’t hold it against you if you decide to skip it. It’s very Gen Z, but then that’s the whole point.

The first three episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
