Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

Animals Ending Explained: Who Is Actually Kidnapped?

The biggest twist in Animals (2026) is revealed pretty early into the movie. The child everyone is desperately trying to bring home is not Mark Kimball’s son, Denny. It is Hector, the son of their nanny, Cecilia. Honestly, the reveal changes the entire situation because what begins as a parent’s worst nightmare slowly takes a turn. While Abigail seems worried for Cecilia’s son’s life, Mark is also worried about his image as he runs as a mayoral candidate if something happens to their Spanish nanny’s son.

Cecilia had taken both Denny and Hector to a festival, and both the kids were wearing the same costume. The kidnappers mistake Hector for Denny and kidnap him, believing they have managed to get their hands on the mayoral candidate’s son. The ransom asked is $7 million for his safe return, expecting Mark and Abigail to do everything to get their son back.

The one significant problem is that the couple do not have the money to meet the ransom demand, and Abigail was, in fact, unaware of it. This is where Dayle Anderson enters the picture: with the situation getting out of control, they seek Dayle’s help. The “help” is not a generous act of kindness without strings attached. The deal comes with an additional $1.4 million in interest that Mark and Abigail will have to pay back once the deal is locked.

Even before the truth about the kidnapped child comes out, the couple are already indebted to Dayle, and she does not seem like a person who would let them forget what they owe her. Even when they discover that the child kidnapped is Hector, the kidnappers keep the terms the same, and the deal remains the same.

What Are the Three Options Dayle Gives?

With the kidnapping becoming increasingly dangerous, Dayle lays out three possible ways for Mark and Abigail to handle the situation.

Option one is to pay the kidnappers; the second is to involve the police; the third is to get the kidnappers killed altogether. The couple decide to go with the first option initially, as Abigail is not comfortable with the third, and the second one can put Hector in danger.

However, as the rescue operation approaches the next day, Mark tells Dayle that he wants to proceed with the third option, and when asked if Abby knew about it, he says she does. On the previous night, Mark ends up finding out about Abby’s affair with Ron and confronts her; she then opens up about how she felt “alone” even while he was present and that Mark always wanted to be loved by the entire Los Angeles. The couple talk things out between them the same night, and Abigail tells Mark that he could do what he felt like.

Now, Dayle has recorded his instructions and agrees to the plan. The decision is crucial because it sets the stage for the final confrontation, where Mark’s desire to control the outcome actually bumps into a situation that goes slightly out of control.

When Hector is found, a man on Dayle’s side targets the kidnappers. Two of them, masked, rush towards the bag of money and are shot, but there is a third in the picture. The third masked man shoots Dayle and then moves towards Mark and Hector, aiming at them.

Who Is Finally Saved?

Before things could get worse, Ramon, Hector’s father, arrives and shoots the kidnapper. The rescue is over, but the consequences are only beginning. As Mark and Hector are safe, Mark, at one point, calls Ramon a hero, to which he responds by saying that it is about perspective.

This is when Mark plans to change the entire narrative around the story. Mark takes away the recording proof from Dayle, who was lying shot, bleeding on the ground. Mark now controls the entire narrative itself.

How Does Mark Turn the Ending in His Favour?

Now, Mark reshaped the entire narrative for the public. He presents himself as the man who helped save a kidnapped child and protected Ramon and Hector from an armed kidnapper who was going to shoot them by shooting the kidnapper. He acknowledged his flaw, especially keeping an unserialed rifle and explained the circumstances surrounding the incidents, framing his actions around the desperate attempt to rescue a child and his father in danger. He turned the narrative in his favour.

In fact, Ramon, in a public address, speaks about how Mark “helped” save Ramon’s son. The public now sees him with a different lens and perspective. Mark’s political campaign benefits from the narrative, and he gains the votes. He has basically managed to turn a situation that could have ruined his career into something that helps him win.

Who Is the Kidnapper? What Happens to Ron?

The identity of the kidnapper remains anonymous, but during the final phone call in which Mark is asked to keep the bag of money, the kidnapper does tell Mark that he has ruined him. Mark, however, says that he does not even know him. The kidnapper, in fact, even mentions that after something that Mark did, he does not have anything to lose. He even says, “You are here, so you can understand what it feels like to live with humiliation”. The identity, however, is not really revealed.

Even during the confrontation, the kidnappers appear as masked men.

As for Ron, after Mark confronts Abby, the next morning Ron tests her by asking for updates, but she is seen typing a message saying sorry to him, which perhaps brings an end to the relationship altogether.

What Does the Ending Finally Say?

Mark gets what he wants in the end: Hector is rescued, the public sees him as a hero, and his political ambitions move forward while his family life is now safe.

The way he turns a violent, morally complicated situation into a campaign advantage makes his victory remain unclean. Animals ends by leaving us with an uncomfortable question, which is, “Does doing the right thing matter when you can convince everyone that you did the right thing, when the truth is messier?” and that makes the title, Animals, fit in well.
