Animals Review on X: Ben Affleck’s Netflix Thriller Leaves X Divided Over Promising Premise and Execution

Animals Review on X: For several viewers, sharing their reactions on X (formerly Twitter). The Netflix thriller follows a mayoral candidate and his wife as they make desperate attempts to secure their son, with their increasingly extreme choices. It sounds like a premise that could make you bite your nails and make for a tense, morally complicated film. Unfortunately, not everyone seems happy with the film’s delivery.

While some viewers appreciate its darker turns and thriller approach, others believe that Animals has too many ideas and very few satisfying payoffs. X seems frustrated about the distance between the anticipation they carried and the execution that is delivered.

Animals Review on X: Viewers Seem Disappointed

X user @ZachhPope was particularly disappointed with Animals (2026), admitting that they expected the film to be one of the surprise Netflix releases that actually feels cinematic rather than a forgettable addition to the streaming menu, adding, “To say I’m disappointed is an understatement”.

The post acknowledged the performances and appreciated certain cultural touches and themes, writing, “I liked some of the themes & specific touches on culture, and sure, it can be entertaining in the moment. But by the end? Completely forgettable.” According to the review, the first act kept planting seeds, but the movie did not deliver them in a satisfying way.

Less Suspenseful Than Expected

Another user, @RamasScreen, similarly felt that Animals did not live up to the suspense that was promised in the trailer. The user criticised the film for spending too much time on marital conflict that never reached the intensity required, writing, “The film spent most of its time on marital drivel that didn’t quite go for the jugular. It tried to tackle complicated dilemmas as the characters weighed their choices, but they never really gelled together.”

Some Viewers Seem Happy

Not everyone walked away in disappointment. User @JoeyMagidson offered a more positive assessment  for the film, describing Animals as a lean and mean thriller that begins darker than the familiar beginning suggests. They compared the film’s scale to Gone Baby Gone, writing, “Closer in scale to Gone Baby Gone than anything Affleck has helmed since, it’s the type of adult fare we used to get so much more of.”

This reaction provides a rather interesting contrast to the criticisms surrounding the film. While some viewers found underwhelming payoffs, this review saw a darker story that offered more than its initial premise suggests.

Another one came not as a review but as a reaction to other reviews. User @effoff1988 expressed disbelief at how poorly Animals appeared to have landed, arguing that the premise should have been enough to deliver decent action, writing, “premise is a pretty standard ‘Ransom meets State of Play’ kind of action thriller, it may not have the goods to be great but it sure should have the goods+creative team to be at least good/mediocre.” They further added that they cannot wait to watch the film.

The reaction states a sense of anticipation and hope; it seems.

Animals Also Faces Criticisms Over Social Commentary

X user @manivannan1980 described Animals as a kidnapping thriller with a promising plot but disappointing execution. The main issue was the screenplay’s attempt to bring in immigration, racism and politics without weaving the subjects effectively, writing, “The script feels disjointed, throwing in bits and pieces of immigration, racism, politics without weaving them together effectively.” Their verdict remains that the film is boring, further telling others that it is “not worth your time”.

X Verdict: Animals Has Potential, But Does It Deliver?

The reactions to Animals on X reveal a thriller caught at the crossroads of potential and execution. While some viewers appreciate the darker turns, some express varying degrees of disappointment with what the film ultimately delivers.

The recurring criticism is not really that the film has nothing interesting to offer but that the interesting ideas do not consistently come together. A promising premise can get people to press play; a familiar name can raise expectations; twists can keep the audience guessing; but none of these can replace the screenplay.

By the early X reviews, it seems that the users are divided, with large disappointment around how the execution betrays the premise for the X viewers.
