Other Mommy Review on X: Jessica Chastain’s Other Mommy, which arrived with the promise of supernatural scares, has become a rather interesting conversation on X (formerly Twitter). There are accusations of “wasted potential”, complaints about extensive jump scares, and few viewers admitting that the film is enough to be entertaining; the consensus seems to be that Other Mommy had the ingredients for something genuinely unsettling, but putting them together produced something completely different.
There appears to be a special kind of cinematic disappointment in watching a film with a potentially fascinating idea stumble midway.
Other Mommy Review on X: A Horror Film that Forgot to Be Scary?
If there is one complaint that keeps cropping up across the reactions, it is that Other Mommy struggles to identify the kind of horror film it wants to be. X user @itsdougjam was particularly unimpressed, calling the film “truly dreadful”. Their review criticised the screenplay, the CGI, writing, “Despite one of the silliest horror plots of the year and a woeful script, it takes itself so staggeringly seriously. An endless parade of ineffective jump scares, awful CGI, and a finale that drew unintentional laughter several times.”
Another user, @moviebuddyjb, also found themself on the side of disappointment. Despite finding the story and ideas intriguing on paper, they felt that the execution fell apart, criticised the script, editing and direction. They rated the film 4/10 and described it as one of their least favourites of the year.
Ussr @thesincerestfem shared a similar sentiment, calling the film “beyond disappointing, and writing, “A derivative amalgamation of wasted potential. While the acting was there, the material didn’t utilize Chastain’s talent NEARLY enough. Narrative depth was traded for an overuse of jump scares.”
Jessica Chastain Deserves Better Material, Suggests X
One of the most common aspects in the reaction is that Jessica Chastain’s performance is repeatedly singled out as a strength, even by the viewers who did not like the film. User @ratedPDG described Other Mommy as an “INSIDIOUS-lite” supernatural horror film that is more silly than scary while acknowledging that Chastain commits to the material but that her performance was not enough to overcome the film’s shortcomings.
Other users also similarly suggested that Chastain was terrifying but was not given enough room to put forth what she could. A post in fact said that the material failed to utilise her talent enough.
Is Other Mommy Really Bad, or Just Fun?
Not everyone walked away disliking the film. User @anthonydapuzzo offered a more forgiving note, describing the film as a “silly & trippy fairytale” that is entertaining. They further added, “It’s pretty dumb & not what I was expecting or necessarily wanted but it’s mindless entertainment that kept me interested enough throughout. Nothing great or special but it’s a watchable 90 minute horror children’s fairy tale.”
The review even compared the film’s sensibilities to early-2000s horror, particularly Boogeyman, mixed with Mama.
User @HerbSimon1986 landed somewhere in the territory defending Chastain’s efforts while describing the film as a “pure mess” and “masterfully cringe”, yet also “bonker fun” for anyone wanting to kill their time at 3 AM.
X Verdict: Other Mommy Has People Talking, But Not Necessarily For Right Reasons
The reactions to Other Mommy on X are not unanimous, and that is worth acknowledging. Some viewers seem to have found a silly, visually interesting horror fairytale that delivers enough entertainment to watch it. Others believe that its screenplay, editing, direction and the dependence on jump scares underplay what could have been a more compelling film.
Jessica Chastian’s performance becomes one of the more consistently appreciated elements, even among the ones who largely disliked the film, but the repeated criticism that the material did not make complete use of her ability is common on X.
Ultimately, Other Mommy appears to be caught in a horror-movie limbo. From comments on X, it seems to have great ideas that could have been unsettling, an actor capable of making the ideas feel real, and visual possibilities that some viewers appreciate. According to early X posts, the narrative cohesion appears missing.
