Netflix’s Bo Burnham: Inside Review: Quarantine Memories with a Twist

Bo Burnham: Inside released today, on 30th of May, 2020, on Netflix. It is written and directed by and stars just one person. If you think this is interesting, then just wait for it! The entire show has songs and real-life experiences of Bo Burnham from the time we were quarantined. It is a dark stand up comedy show.

The Plot of Bo Burnham: Inside

The show does not have a proper storyline because it is not scripted, but rather, is based on real-life incidents. It can be described as the best version of a blog that lasted for a year. Additionally, all the interactions between Burnham and the viewers are in the form of songs. The entire show has been shot, directed and written by one person, that too in just a tiny room. Burnham shot the special over the course of a year without any assistance – a true one-man army! According to him, it was just him and his camera, and just us and our screens.

Bo Burnham: Inside starts with a glimpse of the empty room in which the entire performance has been shot, with Burnham entering the room in the end. Cut to the next scene; we get to know through his song that the pandemic has set in – a grim reminder of 2020. This makes Burnham question whether it is okay to joke in this situation and what part he can play in the grand scheme of things. To this, he gets the answer that he can use the indescribable power of comedy – the world needs laughter and happiness and to be reminded of the better things in life, so Burnham continues doing what he does best.

Like this, there are real-life incidents of his experiences of the pandemic narrated by him in the show. He talks about internships, sexting, suicidal thoughts, the world of the internet, internet marketing, turning 30 and whatnot. With the perfect balance of entertainment and humour, this Netflix special is undoubtedly a win.

The climax is also well-shaped and does not fail to impress. The portions that truly stood out are the sock song and the reactions to his video, as well as the lifestreaming game. Only a genius like him can create something unique using frustration, anxiety and depression. Through his game, he made us cry and entertained us at the same time. Thus, Bo Burnham: Inside ends on a satisfying and heart-touching note.

Overview of Bo Burnham: Inside

Bo Burnham: Inside

Considering it’s a one-person show, Bo Burnham: Inside is a complete masterpiece. This Netflix special has given us a lot to remember with proper editing, lighting, shooting, directing, and acting. Even the songs with dark humour are perfect. If the stand-up did not have BTS clips, no one would have realised that it was a single person’s work, which generally takes an entire crew to finish.

Burnham’s efforts are commendable as he has done a fabulous job. After seeing this, you will remember the sleepless nights, nightmares and bad times of your quarantine life – but with a twist. You will also relate to him, empathize with him and cry with him almost every time. There are many lessons and messages imparted in this special, which is worth watching and hearing. However, the special could’ve benefited from a shorter runtime.
