Deku meets the previous users My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 18

There has been a waning but still somewhat prevalent theory among the fans of the show since the very start, one that speculated if All Might and Deku had quirks that they weren’t able to see manifest because of their nature and assumed they were quirkless because of it. Naturally, there was a lot of reckless speculation about what those unseen quirks could have been, from All Might’s body type to something a little more sinister for Deku. However, My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 18 put all those theories to bed with a new revelation.

Deku has been pretty maligned in some online circles ever since the show started, and this hatred for him has only grown with time. He was seen as whiny, not strong enough to carry All Might’s mantle, too generic of a protagonist, and lacking in personality. Setting aside the fact that he is supposed to be an everyman that we can all relate to, most of the criticisms have never been fair and reflective of people’s thoughts on the anime as a whole. However, after this episode, there isn’t the slightest chance that anyone with the same criticisms is making them in good faith.

This was a phenomenal episode which featured our first look at Deku after he collapsed on the battlefield after a gruelling battle with Tomura Shigaraki. His meeting with the previous holders inside his own conscience had been coming for a long time, and it was handled extremely well as My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 18 put a single question in front of Deku- if push came to shove, does he hold the capability to kill Tomura Shigaraki?

There were some beautiful parallels drawn between the two as we dwelled upon Deku’s quirkless past and looked at what One For All is beyond being a quirk. What was only noticed up to this point was put to words by the show in a manner that can only be called mesmerising. The reveal also made much logical sense and gave more purpose to Deku being the one to inherit One For All instead of anyone else in the world. What used to be a dumb coincidence was given more justification and not in a manner that felt like the show was covering its behind.

The events leading from here were also great as the Top-3 heroes confronted the public about Endeavor’s past and the future of the country. A new direction for UA High was also revealed, and Deku seems to have found what he needs to do to destroy All For One once and for all. My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 18 was also quite an emotional episode that will have you on the verge of breaking down multiple times throughout its runtime. As the final frame proudly proclaimed, the Final Chapter started with a bang.

Verdict

My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 18 was a fantastic look at the show’s past and future as it took a leap forward in its universe and finished a fascinating chapter of its existence.
