My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5 Review: First Cosplay Event

Well, this was just adorable! My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5 had a lot to follow through, and it did so beautifully. Let’s see how Marin and Gojo’s first cosplay event went in this review!

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5 Overview

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5 Title

My Dress-Up Darling or Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi Wo Suru in original Japanese is a romance and slice of life anime based on a popular manga written series by Shinichi Fukuda. It is being adapted into the medium of anime by Studio CloverWorks, a studio that hasn’t exactly been having the best time of its existence right about now. The studio has faced immense criticism in just the previous year for its handling of two anime properties, Wonder Egg Priority and The Promised Neverland Season 2.

Keisuke Shinohara is directing the show. He has been directly involved in the productions of various anime series in the past, including Wonder Egg Priority and Devilman: Crybaby. Marin Cosplay

The show was coming off a huge win in this episode, and it was going to be hard to top the brilliance of the previous outing. However, while many in the same position may have taken it easy this week and went for a laid back and relaxed episode with few major consequences, Dress-Up Darling chose otherwise. It decided to go hard in the paint again with another pivotal event for the series, the couple’s first cosplay event.

Despite some past misgivings, this event went great! It put to light a very important aspect of fandom culture- Cons and Cosplay. There are aspects to this that are very easy to ignore, such as the amount of discomfort the cosplayers are in throughout the event and the effort that goes into every one of those costumes. While there have been other shows that have explored this, My Dress up Darling Episode 5 worked particularly well because the appreciation and spirit of the art of cosplay are deeply entangled with the show’s entire existence.

Emotional MArin My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5

The show treats cosplay with a level of seriousness that’s unlike most anime that have come before it. It pays attention to details that most others might gloss over or consider unimportant. It gives an edge to the show that helps differentiate it from the rest of its kind and makes it special in an anime world that is famously not lacking in supply. In a dog-eat-dog world, you have to do anything and everything you can to survive. In anime terms, that sometimes translates to “get attention in any way possible”, something My Dress-up Darling knows very well.

There was still a bunch of material here with sexual overtones, but it is becoming less and less pervasive as the relationship between Gojo and Marin is developing. Their dynamic is phenomenal, and what sets them apart is the level of mutual respect that the pair has for each other. They demonstrate in almost every episode how much both of them appreciate each other and their friendship, and that comes out fantastically in this episode. The last segment was heartwarming and almost the best thing the show has ever done.

There was an element of “Where do we go from here” that formed the backdrop of this entire episode. As the audience, we obviously knew that the show wasn’t going anywhere for at least 12 episodes, but it still did a great job in establishing that the characters still don’t know each other’s place in their lives. That uncertainty led to this outing being a tiny bit tenser than the rest, and it was great to see how this particular storyline ended. No need to worry here!

Verdict

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5 was a wonderful continuation of the fantastic effort we saw last week. The show has been putting out fantastic material for quite a while now, and may this streak continue forever.
