Muscles and Mayhem: When and Where to Watch the American Gladiators Docuseries

Reality shows have been an intrinsic part of pop culture. But sometimes, we merely see what we are made to see. The truth is far from it. One example is the 90s sports reality show “American Gladiators”. Netflix’s upcoming web series Muscles And Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story Of American Gladiators shows the meteoric rise and fall of this very popular competitive reality show that took America by storm. One can say that it was WWE’s counterpart but more brutal and truer than one might think. Sounds interesting? Well, you’re in for a hell of a ride. Here’s all you need to know about the series.

American Gladiators was created by Dan Carr and John Ferraro in 1982, and the show first aired on American television in 1989, going on till 1996. It didn’t take long to catapult the gladiators, loved by their fans all across the country, towards unprecedented fame. From action figures to other merchandise, they became no less than superheroes and cultural icons. But while the audience was enjoying the show, its reality was something entirely different. Muscles And Mayhem is that reality. The merciless mayhem apparently became a way for the viewers to vent out their inner rage, and the athletes were ready to go all in. The outcome was unexpected, to say the least.

The series contains interviews from the “Gladiators” themselves, who pitted against amateur athletes as well as each other. The aim was entertainment via athleticism. As cool as it sounds, and as cool as it really was back in the 90s; more than 2 decades later, we will find out what happened “backstage”. The dark reality, the turmoil, the blood and bones; everything in the words of those who starred. The Muscles And Mayhem cast include Dan Clark, Debbie Clark, Jim Kalafat, Erika Andersch Bunker, Michael Horton, Raye Olson, and many more.

Muscles And Mayhem Plot

The Muscles And Mayhem plot delves deep into the experiences of the gladiators in their own words about how fame got the better of them. From the trailer, it is clear that “American Gladiators” was brutal; a no-holds-barred game show. Athletes threw each other off platforms, pinned each other, and none of it was staged. “Barbaric”, “do or die”, “scary”, “no mercy”; all these words, as heard in the trailer, sound like they are taken from a Hollywood action movie. And yet none of it was staged.

Everything that was happening in the show was real. Furthermore, what was happening on the inside was even worse. From sex to drugs, the gladiators, who appeared to be straight out of a contra video game, with their ripped bodies, were having it all. It was a nightmare to look at, but for them, it was the price of fame that they were more than happy to pay.
