Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 2 Review- Decisions

Intent and framing are two of the most important parts of storytelling that get unnoticed by many people while considering the quality of a piece of media. Something can have the most interesting story, which can get absolutely ruined by how it is framed or the characters it chooses to tell that story through. However, the simplest of tales can be enhanced with great characters and a tight narrative built around the simplicity. This episode of Mob Psycho had the most basic plot ever, which was told in a way that can only be described as impressive.

Mob had to figure out a way to get his good-for-nothing friends to get involved in the school festival while still trying to find the courage and gumption to put himself out there when he was afraid of everyone judging him for it. Mob might just be the easiest guy to root for in all of anime, and this includes characters like Ed and Al Elric, who have never once had a good thing happen to them in their life. The sweetness and innocence that he emanates from his entire being are incomparable to almost anyone else.

Then came the framing, or how Mob actually came to learn more about his problem and how to deal with it- a setup so simple that it might just be lifted straight from a “How to Write a Manga 101” class textbook. You see, Mob defeated Demons, and as he did that, drew some similarities between the atmosphere present in the building at the moment and his current predicament, et voila! If this were a Warner Brothers cartoon, there would be a lightbulb on Mob’s head right now. Yet, it all worked perfectly with what we know the show is and wants to accomplish.

Reigen and Serizawa were also along with the ride, which was started by a new visitor to their business- somebody who proclaimed themselves to be a Yokai Hunter extraordinaire. Reigen’s interactions with him were very funny, even if they were somewhat predictable. Seeing Mob and Serizawa work together to take down another somewhat strong enemy was a treat, and the overall resolution to the episode was also great and left you wanting more, which is always a good thing.

Apart from all of this, there wasn’t much else that happened in this episode. There was some quiet character development on Mob’s part, and Reigen was his usual boisterous self, but that was apparently it. The animation and music were great, as they always are, so this was quite an unremarkable episode in the very high-quality catalogue of Mob Psycho episodes. Still, it was a very fun watch and accomplished some important development. Let’s see what the next week brings!
Verdict
Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 2 was a pretty fun and meaningful one, but not much happened here that separated it from the rest of the show’s outings. It was just standard Mob Psycho 100 fair, which is in no way a bad thing.
