The concept of time travel mingles with romance and comedy in the new Peacock feature Meet Cute. Starring SNL star Pete Davidson and Kaley Cuoco in titular roles, the film explores a vibrant NYC date that just never ends.
The flick dominantly rests on the shoulders of Cuoco, with a recurring role from Deborah Craig, who plays June, the owner of the time-travelling equipped Nail Salon.

It all starts inside a local New York City Bar, where Sheila (Kaley Cuoco) meets Gary (Pete Davidson) for the first time and initiates a friendly conversation. At first, Sheila looks like a radiant and chirpy soul, with an honest intention to land the perfect meet cute instance.
On the other hand, Gary is a self-absorbed introvert who is more than happy to let Sheila decide their fate for the night. Soon enough, he shares the trauma and complexities of his childhood, while the pair bonds over Indian food and midnight shopping.
Everything is completely normal until Sheila comes out with the truth. She goes on to explain to Gary that they have met before, dined before, and had all these same conversations night after night.

Sheila discovered a time machine that only lets her travel back in time. And for some weird yet destined reason, she has been replaying the same events for months.

Gary plays along with the joke and shrugs her time travel adventures with a Terminator reference. Only to get fed up later and leave her standing for a new tomorrow.
Meet Cute is an experimental attempt to wrap several elements in a ninety-minute runtime. The intelligent approach tries to unfold the story with comical flashbacks but fails to convince emotionally. Many moments end up feeling rushed and artificial in the process.
Kaley Cuoco is expressively brilliant in her portrayal. She is also the driving force behind the film and a perfect match for the character of Sheila. After her Golden Globe nomination for The Flight Attendant, the BBT actress has found a liking for innovative roles.

If Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island is any proof, Pete Davidson is a strong and natural performer. But for some reason, he is not in his usual form. Eventually, Gary lacks enough nuances, and his arch runs aground in a loop.
Nevertheless, there are few moments of joy in the film (which is the perks of watching a rom-com). The stunning cinematography and linking soundtrack save the day and add weight to the story. John Matysiak has perfectly captured the bright moments of the film, and his lens aptly translates the beauty of the East Coast in the dark.
Peacock’s Meet Cute Review: Final Thoughts
Director Alex Lehman fails to impact with his date night rendition of Groundhog Day. In the film, the protagonist remembers everything at the end of each night. Which is not something I can say about the audience. Ultimately, the only thing you might remember is to add the cozy film soundtrack to your Spotify playlist.
Meet Cute is now available to stream on Peacock.
