MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 17 is titled ‘Team Challenge In Thalassa’ and the synopsis reads as – The home cooks gear up for their first team challenge in the famous greek restaurant ‘Thalassa’ in Goa, wherein they have to make a three-course Mediterranean meal. Which team will succeed in the challenge?
The judges of the show include Vikas Khanna and Ranveer Brar, who are joined by Garima Arora, the first-ever female chef to be a judge on the show. The cooking competition show is a nationwide quest to find the best ‘home cook’ and draws out some of the most brilliant chefs from across India. The judges sample recipes from various cuisines that the contestants prepare in their search for India’s ‘MasterChef’. The show is produced by Endemol Shine India and it is directed by Neeraj Shetty.

In today’s challenge, the contestants find themselves at a famous greek restaurant in Goa – Thalassa. They will experience working in a professional commercial kitchen of the restaurant under its executive chef Eddie. However, it is a team challenge and the captains of the two teams will be the contestants who won the last challenge.
Priyanka and Priya, who won in the last episode get the advantage of becoming the captains. But this time, the remaining contestants will choose which team they want to be on. Soon they line up behind their choice and only a few people choose Priyanka, looking at her performance in the last team challenge. The captains also get a chance to swap any contestant they want, at first Priya wanted to exchange Avinash with Nayanjyoti but they settled on whom they had.
So the final two teams were – The blue team consisting of Priyanka as captain, Kamaldeep, Nayanjyoti, Vineet, Sachin and Suvarna. The yellow team consisted of Priya as the captain, along with Gurkirat, Avinash, Santa, Deepa and Aruna. The challenge for today is to make a 3-course Mediterranean cuisine. They will be given 90 minutes in total.
At the 60th minute, they will have to bring their first course, which will be a mezze platter. After that at the 75th minute, they will have to bring the main course and lastly at the end of the challenge, they will have to bring the desserts. Also, along with the judges, the person who created the restaurant – Mariketty Grana will be judging the dishes.
The teams were given only 5 minutes to take their ingredients from the pantry and both the team captains decided to go for it. However, due to limited time and confusion, they couldn’t bring all the required ingredients and had to work with what was available or barter it with the opposing team. All this created much chaos and confusion in the kitchen so much so that the judges had to intervene and tell them to compose themselves.
Working in a professional kitchen with big burners and live fire grills, things were not easy and Chef Eddie had to guide them all through, several times. Grilling was found to be much more difficult for the contestants as they were not able to analyse how to work with it. They even had a short circuit in the kitchen.
Finally, at the 60th minute, the teams presented their mezze platter to the judges. On first look team blue’s platter was much more filled up than yellow’s. They had made at least 10 ingredients including grilled prawns, lavash, mussels, different kinds of dips, grapes and even a drink. However, the mussels were not cleaned properly and they were dry as well.
The yellow team prepared a flatbread, dolma, olive fetta salad and some dips as well. However, the empty spaces didn’t give it a mezze look and didn’t work in their favour. Also, the cucumber cups were not seasoned and that left a careless impression on the judges. By a unanimous vote, the Blue team took the win for this challenge, as their platter gave a friendly sharing feeling.

Today’s challenge was somewhat a redemption for Priyanka to overcome her bad experience of being a captain in the previous challenge, and show her true capabilities. The mezze platter worked in her favour but looking at the preview, it’s certain that team yellow took the win in the main course.
Also, the episode today was full of voice-overs that didn’t even match the original audio and stood out weirdly. The judges explaining a correlation between Mediterranean food and Indian food, through dubbed voice-over makes it certain that the creators are looking at the comments on the lack of Indian cuisine representation. But adding the promotion placement voiceover every time someone pours Amul milk or butter, is just bizarre since they are not even saying it in the video – it’s like we are hearing their head voice.
MasterChef India Season 7 is currently streaming on SonyLIV and a new episode is released from Monday to Friday at 9 PM.
